While I cannot speak for the Researchers and their reasoning, have you seen the advertising tactics used by the likes of Advanced System Care?  I've never observed such used to advertise CCleaner, Ashampoo or AVG where what appeared to be legitimate "Download" and "Download Now" buttons for unrelated software on major download sites like MajorGeeks and CNET/Download.com pointed to Advanced System Care.  Such tactics are unethical in my opinion and are alone sufficient to categorize these apps as PUP, but beyond that, they also quite frequently detect "critical issues" on fresh Windows installations where there should be no issues with the registry.

Also, the last time I checked, Malwarebytes makes no registry cleaner/optimizer so ASC isn't a competitor.  They do make an anti-malware application, however it is not detected as PUP by Malwarebytes.

By the way, an easier way to add the app to exclusions would be to perform a scan, and once it has completed and you see all of the detections for the application you wish to exclude listed, click the checkbox at the very top of the list of detections which should unmark all of the detected items' checkboxes.  Once that is done, click the Next button at the bottom and click Ignore Always in the dialog prompt that pops up and that should add all entries for the application to your exclusions so that they will no longer be detected by scans or realtime protection.

The following images should prove helpful to illustrate what I'm referring to:
