Trouble with updates

Recommended Posts

Ok, everyone of you is having the same issue I am getting.  A case opened, seems like a week ago, 51 hours ago has not yet been responded to.  So far, the only correction has been to use the clean install utility that uninstalls MB and reinstalls.  Daily....

BTW, if you are wondering about the application name for 3.2.2.+ it is both Malwarebytes Premium and Malwarebytes Premium Anti-Exploit.

So, I opened an online chat to get help.   Here are the pertinent points of the conversation.

  • Tech: I can only recommend to turn of self protection and uninstall and reinstall
  • Me: Ok, what is "self protection" and how do I turn it off.  If I uninstall, doesn't that turn it off?
  • Tech: Real time protection
  • Me: (getting frustrated) So, I should simply use the Malwarebytes free version as I think the only difference is real-time protection.
  • Tech: That is totally your prerogative

They then showed me a list of differences between Premium and Free:

  • Real Time Protection
  • Anti-exploit
  • Anti-Ransomware
  • Malicious website protection

I'm unclear how MB protects from exploits, ransomware, and malicious websites if realtime protection is turned off.  Yet, that is their current solution.

PS, the reason MB is not auto-updating is because they have that feature turned off.  So, Turn off Real time protection and manually reinstall every day to keep the updates current.

My issues began earlier than two days ago but I severaly days researching and trying to fix the issues on my own.  The issue is most likely the Windows update which, for me, occurred on the 27th.  So I do not blame MB for the actual issue, but apparently the help desk has no idea about this issue six days later.

Hi @ExpertNovice

Most of the files were locked and could not be scanned. This may have been due to Webroot or Emsisoft or there could be something else on your computer blocking these tools.

Can you please make sure that Webroot Secure and Emsisoft are fully disabled and run the MB-Check tool again. First reboot your computer. Then make sure those programs are disabled and run a new FRST scan with a check mark on the Additions.txt check box. Then MB-Check

Thank you

Ron

Root Admin,

mb-check-results.zip was sent

The following is really for others looking for answers.  You might quickly look at the underlined text.  Especially important is to use the FRST logs with the date/time stamp "_02-11-2017 08.44.30".   The date/time stamps are not yyyy-mm-dd format so they sort incorrectly.

FRST needs to run with administrative privileges.

Today, internet access was disabled.  Then, on two accounts Webroot, Malwarebytes, and Emsisoft had their protections stopped.  In both cases Emsisoft said Fileguard would remain active.

Run 1 User account resulting file sizes:
FRST_02-11-2017 08.38.52.txt      60 KB
Addition_02-11-2017 08.38.52.txt  40 KB

Run 2 Admin account resulting file sizes:
FRST_02-11-2017 08.44.30.txt      63 KB
Addition_02-11-2017 08.44.30.txt  50 KB

Both times FRST64.exe started with the following error.  From a bit of research it seems this error is simply FRST wanting to update itself but couldn't due the internet connection being disabled.
