Slow initial launch (again).

Recommended Posts

MB3 Free is being very slow to launch with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

(I'm also wondering if this long launch time may be responsible for some of the other first boot / startup issues being reported with the full version of MB3 and the Fall Creators Update).

With MB3 Free, (version 3.2.2.2018, component 1.0.212, update 1.0.3124):

On initial launch it's taking 15 to 20 seconds from double clicking the desktop Icon to the GUI appearing on the desktop.

This happens if/when you have quit MB3 altogether. (From the system tray icon).
With the background processes running it takes around 2 seconds from clicking the icon to the GUI appearing.

Which indicates that its a background process that is taking the time to start, and delaying the main GUI window.

OK, so the quick solution would be to leave the background processes running.

But I've removed the monthly scan schedule because I scan weekly anyway.
And I don't like unwanted/uneeded processes running on my computer.

I tried deleting mbamtray.exe altogether, did not cure the slow launch problem.

So what else (besides the tray application) starts up with MB3 Free, and keeps running after it has been closed? Answer- Malwarebytes Service.

This is the 'self protection' module for the real time protection.

So my questions are:

  1. Why is the self protection module needed for the free version that only scans files?
  2. Is it actually doing something more than self protection of real time mode?
  3. Why is it left running after MB3 free has been closed? (Maybe because it's so slow to launch?)
  4. And why is it taking so long to launch with the Windows 10 FCU?

As said above, I'm also wondering if this slow launch time may be responsible for some of the other first boot / startup issues being reported with the full version of MB3 and the Fall Creators Update.
