Cannot Connect to Wifi After Using Malwarebytes

Good day.  I have been using Malwarebytes for a few years now to run periodic (monthly) scans on my laptop.  It rarely, if ever, detects anything.  Maybe just 1 or 2 detections in the past 3 years.  For about a year now, when I run the "Threat Scan," everything comes up clean.  But when I run the "Custom Scan" and check all the boxes to have it scan my entire system, it cancels part way through with an error message about how it could not complete the scan.

Today, I went to run a scan, and I got a notice that a new version of Malwarebytes was available, so I let it download/install.  After that, I set a "Custom Scan" to run, checked all the boxes, and left my laptop to do its thing while I did some other work around the house.  I came back about half an hour later and found that my computer had restarted.  So I logged back on, and I noticed that I was no longer connected to Wifi.  My computer shows no networks available to connect to (I live in a neighborhood where dozens of connections usually show up).  I can still connect to my own Wifi using my cell phone, but my computer cannot seem to detect any Wifi connections available.  I am currently connected via ethernet cable and seem to have full internet access this way.  When I opened up Malwarebytes and go to the Reports tab, I do not see any logs documenting the scan today.

I have read other threads about people with the same issue, but the support provided to them seems to be very individualized, as in, there is no single universal fix.  What do I need to do to get my computer back on Wifi?  I am running Windows 8.1, 64-bit operating system.

Thank you for your quick response.  I apologize for not seeing this before posting.  I just ran both the Malwarebytes and FRST scans, and the logs are attached here.  The Malwarebytes scan gave me a Scan Report (attached here) that says something about a .json log file, but I can't seem to find where it is located.  Do I need to attach it also?  If so, where do I find it?

Download Mirror http://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/getmirror/complete_internet_repair,2.html

Double click the icon and select Extract (accept UAC alert if applicable)

Double click the Complete Internet Repair folder on your desktop.

Run the version relevant to your system, 32 bit or 64 bit.

Double click the CIntRep.exe icon <----32 bit version.

Double click the ClntRep_64.exe icon <--- 64 bit version

Place a checkmark next to the following entries:
  • Reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
  • Repair Winsock (Reset Catalog)
  • Renew Internet Connections
  • Flush DNS Resolver Cache
  • Repair Internet Explorer
  • Clear Windows Update History
  • Repair Windows / Automatic Updates
  • Repair SSL / HTTPS / Cryptography
  • Reset Windows Firewall Configuration
  • Restore the default hosts file
  • Repair Workgroup Computers view

Click Go!

Ignore any error messages for now

Click OK to reboot your computer, Is the wireless connection restored?

If I unplug the ethernet cable and troubleshoot problems, it simply asks me to plug in an ethernet cable.

When I run troubleshoot with the ethernet cable plugged in, it gives me a window (screenshot included here).  I clicked "I'm having a different problem," which brought me to another window (screenshot 2), and I selected "Use a specific network adapter (for example, Ethernet or wireless)".  That brought me to the next window where it asked me to select an adapter.  Since I didn't see a wireless adapter there, I chose the last option (screenshot 3).  When I clicked OK, the next window said "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem."  Under Details, it just says that no issues were detected.

Run this please and post its log:

Download Farbar Service Scanner from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-service-scanner/dl/62/ and run it on the computer with the issue.

Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center/Action Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

FSS is not even listing any WLAN entries. Select the windows key and R key together, type or copy services.msc into  the "Run" box. The service window will open, scroll down to WLAN. That service should be active and its startup setting should be "Automatic" is that correct.

If that is correct right click on that entry line and select "Properties" a new window will open. Select "Dependencies" tab from top menu bar, make sure dependent entries (ones with cog wheels) are running and automatic startup entry.....

I found WLAN in the Services window, and it showed "running" and "automatic."  I also found all of its indicated Dependencies (from the Properties menu) in the same list and they all showed "running" and "automatic."

At that point, there was a message in the lower righthand part of my screen that said that Windows had installed updates and wanted me to restart my computer, so I did.  When the system rebooted and I logged back on, I had Wifi access again.  I'm not at all sure what happened, but I am connected to Wifi now.  Also, under Control Panel/Network Connections, where yesterday I only showed Cisco AnyConnect (my school's VPN) and Ethernet, I now have a third icon that says Wi-Fi that wasn't there before.


So everything seems back to normal now after Windows did an update and the system rebooted (I had restarted several times before the update to no avail).  Is there anything else you would like for me to do?  Is there a way to figure out what happened, and whether Malwarebytes had anything to do with it or if the timing was just a coincidence?

It is really hard to say what happened to the wifi, there was no log from Malwarebytes to check. There had been a system crash on the same date attributed to a driver from Trendmicro "tmcomm.sys" I have no idea what that driver does, a Google search does show it can be responsible many BSOD....

If your system is behaving as expected and there are no remaining issues or concerns I guess we can clean up....

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

If your security program alerts to Delfix either, accept the alert or turn your security off.

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following item is the only one checked:

  • Remove disinfection tools <----- this will remove tools we may have used.

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…
