Unable to update...

Recommended Posts

I've been using MalWareBytes Premium for a few years, and have never had an issue, but now I'm unable to update...getting 'Unable to contact license server'. I've checked my internet connection, and am able to surf to various web sites.  Win 7 64bit  Anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks!

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  4. Press the "Scan" button
  5. This will product two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  6. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  7. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  8. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  9. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  10. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Restart into an administrator account and do the following.

Let us get a clean install of the current version.

We have another tool called MB-Clean which will automate the whole process for you.

Tool can be found at https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean

1. After downloading the tool run the tool.

2. The tool will automatically clean up the older possibly damaged installation and will ask you for a restart.

3. Restart your system and then the MB-Clean tool will prompt you to re-install the latest product .

4. Click on "Yes" to reinstall MB 3.×.

5. Now you will have the latest product installed.

Please let me know if you are still seeing issues after the latest product install.

OK, I was able to do steps 1-3. The MB-Clean tool did not prompt me to re-install the latest product.
After waiting 15 mins, I ran the 'mb3-setup-consumer-3.1.2.1733-1.0.122-1.0.1976.exe' that I had saved in my download folder, applied my license key and ID, that had saved, and was able to update the MalWareBytes Free to Premium 3.1.2, and do an update, and a scan.
So, I guess, my issue is resolved? Is 3.1.2 the most current version? While  I was writing this, a 'Update to the latest version' popped-up, and I installed Premium 3.2.2, and ran another scan.
I think I'm done? Thanks for your help!

I may have spoken too soon...I've noticed that when I do a scan(any kind...threat, custom, hyper), that only the 'Check for Updates', and 'Pre-Scan Operations' in-progress indicators light up.
The scan never makes it to 'Scan Memory', Scan Startup Files', Scan Registry', Scan File System', or Heuristics Analysis'. For all scans:Items scanned:0, Threats detected:0, Threats quarantined:0.
Shouldn't the Items scanned be more than 0?

Check "winmgmt" service or repair WMI.

Let's try the easiest solution first:

  1. Click Start -> Run
  2. Type services.msc and click Ok
  3. Scroll down and find Windows Management Instrumentation
  4. Right click Windows Management Instrumentation and choose Start
  5. If you get an error here, please take a screenshot and post the error here. If you don't get an error, continue on the with the next steps
  6. Right click it again, and choose properties
  7. In the middle of the screen, change Startup Type: to Automatic and click Ok
  8. Reboot
  9. Run a threat scan.

The Startup Type:is already set to automatic, and both are greyed-out

From now on please do all steps and test from the Administrator account.

Before I saw your most recent post, I tried playing a video file, and got 'WMP:Malicious Memory Protection:Exploit code executing from Heap memory blocked.'...which I got a few months ago. I was able to resolve this by  going to MalWareBytes main console, under 'settings', a 'Protection' tab...the 2nd item down is 'Exploit Protection'(which is 'on').  There's a 'Manage Protected Applications' button, and 'Advanced Settings' button.  I wasn't quite sure what to click under the 'Advanced Settings' button, but  in the 'Manage Protected Applications', I was able to turn off protection for WMP. And now it works. I have been able to run all 3 kinds of scans all the way through....I think that since I installed a new version of MalWareBytes, it lost

the WMP exclusion I had set up previously...now everything is back to normal. I have made notes of all this for future 'errors' , and hopefully won't have to bother you guys again.

Thanks for all your help!!!
