Quiltnana Posted October 22, 2017 ID:1175016 Share Posted October 22, 2017 While cleaning out email from my small laptop which is running Windows 8, I noticed Windows Defender wasn’t updating. When I tried to open it, I get a box saying it is not turned on. I’m an elderly person with limited knowledge of what happened but after going through the painful process of trying to troubleshoot it, I discovered Malwarebytes as my virus software. Should I be concerned this happened without my permission and if I’m not comfortable with this, how do I reactivate Defender? Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

The best solution for this is to open Malwarebytes and go to Settings -> Application, then scroll down to the Windows Action Center section and change Malwarebytes to "Never register with Windows Action Center". That setting only applies to the paid or trial version. You do not need to worry about it in the free version. Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues.... FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs Download FRST and save it to your desktopNOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. We have another tool called MB-Clean which will automate the whole process for you. Tool can be found at https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean 1. After downloading the tool run the tool. 2. The tool will automatically clean up the older possibly damaged installation and will ask you for a restart. 3. Restart your system and then the MB-Clean tool will prompt you to re-install the latest product . 4. Click on "Yes" to reinstall MB 3.×. 5. Now you will have the latest product installed. If it does not offer the new install after the reboot you can download and install from here. https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mb3 Please let me know if you are still seeing issues after the latest product install.
