Worm 74BE16.exe won't delete!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I mysteriously inherited a trojan virus of some kind that I think first appeared when it turned all folders on my 6 GB Seagate flash drive into executable files. Since then, I've noticed a file/folder called 74BE16.exe appearing in the Task Manager and hard drive of my laptop. It can be deleted from within the start menu (only way I've been able to find it) and ended as a process during each computer session, but reappears upon startup. Periodically, it spontaneously spawns an browser window for a web site whose numerical domain I haven't noted (I typically close it the moment it appears).

My computer is an HP Pavillion TX1000 notebook running Windows Vista SP1. I have run an HijackThis and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scans with the following results (the file 74BE16.exe appears in the HJT log):

Hi,

I see you are running Teatimer.

I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.

When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.

Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.

This will only take a few seconds.

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Thank you so much for your reply. I performed all of the prescribed actions, however upon startup, two dialogue boxes popped up:

This application has failed to start because MSVCR70.dll was not found. Re-installing the program may fix this problem.

The second one seems harmless to me, but I was unable to identify the significance of the first one. Thought I should inform you of them, either way.

Hi,

Thanks for the log. Malwarebytes is already updated to deal with your problem as well now. New update should be available within the next hour.

It should be in update 2606.

Anyway, since we are using Combofix here, we'll proceed with that now instead to delete the malicious files manually...

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.

Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::

c:\users\HP Pavilion tx1000\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\74BE16.lnk

DeQuarantine::

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\windows\System32\msvcr70.dll.vir

Folder::

c:\windows\system32\5A8DCC

c:\windows\system32\0F6226

c:\windows\system32\76682F

c:\windows\system32\ACF7EF

Registry::

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]

"74BE16"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]

"UacDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

"InternetSettingsDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

"AutoUpdateDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List]

"c:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\bndmss.exe"=-

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

CFScript.gif

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Hi,

This looks OK again.

It looks like Combofix accidentally deleted the msvcr70.dll previously which caused the errors you were getting after startup, so we fixed that as well (by dequarataining the file) with the Cfscript.

The cfscript we created also took care of the malware problem you were dealing with :(

* Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi,

Thank you for the file and Glad I could help. ;)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
