MBAM Icon Not Displayed in System Tray

I have been having the same problem with Malwarebytes Premium not appearing in the notification area.  I tried re-installing over the existing installation, as well as a clean uninstall and complete reinstall.  Both methods resulted in the icon appearing the first reboot and then it disappears for subsequent reboots.

this is on a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium Sp1 with Avast 2017 Free antivirus.
