Web Protection Keeps turning off

Recommended Posts

It's that old problem that looking at all the previous posts on the subject still hasn't been resolved.  I am a home user Windows 10 64 bit running Malwarebytes 3.2.2.029 which has been quite happy until 2 days ago when it keeps switching off web protection. Sometimes a reboot will work, other times not and it just sits with the "starting" message.  Any new ideas?  Is M'bytes team trying to fix it still ?

Hello and Welcome!

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  4. Press the "Scan" button
  5. This will product two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  6. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  7. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  8. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  9. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  10. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Thank You,

Hi Frank

I was 't sure about doing as asked in the first message so I was pleased to see you had managed it but was hoping for better advice than you are getting.  If you look at all the old forums MB ask people to do all these checks etc and have you running around in circles and then the whole trail goes cold with no resolution.  I think ESET is an antivirus package? I use Kaspersky Total Security which is supposed to one of the best matches to MB - I think there are probably glitches all over the place.  I managed to get WebProtection on by delaying Real Time Protetion for 15 seconds but that turned off the RansomWare protection ! Next I uninstalled and reinstalled a trial but that just says it can't connect with the service.  Using a free programme called RevoUninstaller I got it to look for leftover files in the Registry and it found over 50 left behind after the uninstall. I'm about to have another go at downloading.  If it weren't for the fact that I have paid for a premium license up to June 2018 I would go elsewhere.  Fingers crossed Nikhils comes up with something. This is getting kind of scary. A previous post I read about 16 hours ago, their ransomware is off. My malware protection is off. And your web protection is off as of today!

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/212436-mb-3222029-realtime-ransomware-protection-off-again/?tab=comments#comment-1171803

I don't think I made any changes to my system. Lots of people seem to be losing protection and it's not the same protection that's being lost. I am taking down the name Kaspersky Total Security. I will look into and may switch when the time comes. I also run Avast. Somebody said that was good.

But I'm 90% sure I would have noticed that because I was actually looking at it yesterday for something.

We collect logs so the team can find out what is causing the issues that folks are having so they have enough info to know how to fix and make Malwarebytes 3 better.

No need to run RevoUninstaller as Malwarebytes has there own tool to perform a complete uninstall so you can start cleanly. MB Clean Tool

I don't know what I am suppose to do. Is the problem being worked on? Will somebody get back with me? I have used Malwarebyte for a loooooooooong time with out any problem. One time I had some Malware and Malwarebytes took me step by step to fix the problem. That was great! I don't know what I am suppose to do now! Does Malwarebytes just leave you hanging or do they eventually fix the problem and a update corrects the problem. Can someone give me some advice? Please!

For whatever it's worth, somewhere yesterday on perusing this subject I saw the suggestion to delay the start of Malwarebytes. I figure what the heck. So I told it to wait 30 seconds. I turn the computer on, then make a cup of tea, feed the dogs, etc. So I figured I had the time. I also told another program, Trillian not to load, (it's like AIM). This morning all went well. Everything was on, in Malwarebytes.

Hi Everyone

I started this topic yesterday and at the moment I seem to be back on track.  I uninstalled MB, cleaned up using Revo uninstaller (seems MB has its own clean up tool called MB Clean Tool) so I could start afresh.  I then installed version 3.2.2.2029 (alongside Kaspersky Total Security) and everything runs smoothly.  I think MB has had lots of instability upgrading from 2 to 3 but hopefully is getting there as it is a good product -  I've also heard that Avast is good.  PK500

Well, it appears when I got to my computer, after turning it on, and Malwarebytes was booted without problems, that's with the 30-second delay starting. I was going to say, but I was missing an icon for Trillian, but as I said, I turned that off and will start it manually. So leave me alone, I just woke up! :)  I talked to a kid, a couple of years back and he seemed to know a lot about computers. He said Avast. My brother, way back before that said Malwarebytes was all I needed. Both had great reputations. The majority, though, of online research I did seem to feel running both was good since they targeted different things. So I'll keep my fingers crossed for both of us!

  • 1 month later...

It's November 17 and this issue just cropped up for me yesterday...nothing works, including Devin Collin's advice from October 16.

I should add that upon relaunching, everything seemed fine -- but looking into the "Protection" tab, I noticed that real-time web protection was turned off again -- and turning it back on only results in a "starting..." that never finishes...interestingly, I eventually get a "system-tray-type-pop-up" from MalwareBytes that I'm unprotected, giving me the option to "turn on protection," which I do, and MalwareBytes looks normal all over again -- until I go looking into that "Protection" tab....

Another thing: there seems to be some odd connection to "Windows Defender Security Center" as when trying out Devin's advice and exiting MalwareBytes, Windows reports that they've both been shut down (Windows Defender Security Center as well and not just MalwareBytes)....

This worked for me, I stopped it from loading immediately and put it on a 30-second delay. That was after sending Avast Clean-Up through the computer. I've only had it miss loading properly once, and the malware protection was off. I believe I shut it down and then restarted and everything was fine. I'm thinking that it has something to do with starting the computer. If a 'rebooting' of the computer fixes the problem,  that maybe there's a bit of slowness or whatever for a first thing in the morning boot for a fraction of a second that whatever and butts head with Malware and so it won't load properly. I used to have that problem with automatically loading AIM Message. I do that manually, now. But as I said, I won't guarantee it, but I've been doing this for since October 11 with only that one problem.

Thanks for the well-wishes, N -- what I did was uninstall and reinstall but now I'm only at version 3.1.2 -- for some reason, MB isn't picking up on the 3.2.2 (IIRC) version...but at least real-time web protection's turned on now!  ;-)

Let us get a clean install of the current version. 3.3.1

We have another tool called MB-Clean which will automate the whole process for you.

Tool can be found at https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean

1. After downloading the tool run the tool.

2. The tool will automatically clean up the older possibly damaged installation and will ask you for a restart.

3. Restart your system and then the MB-Clean tool will prompt you to re-install the latest product .

4. Click on "Yes" to reinstall MB 3.×.

5. Now you will have the latest product installed. If it does not offer the new install after the reboot you can download and install from here.

https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mb3

Please let me know if you are still seeing issues after the latest product install.

BTW, I thought about doing that. I just figured I'd try the delayed starts because it was easier and faster for me.

The latest update seemed to have resolved the problem of web protection tunring off for me - unless Kaspersky Total Security was running a rootkit scan. Quiting and relaunching MBytes solved the problem.  Tonight when I powered up and saw lots of messages on the subject and my web protection off I quit and relaunched again and so far so good. Clearly severalmismatches in the system still - each of us finding our own resolution!
