Virus in CC Cleaner

Recommended Posts

Yes, there was an incident with a recent CCleaner release where it was infected, however the current version is perfectly safe.  Malwarebytes 3 did detect the infected version of CCleaner, so you can always check your systems for infected versions by scanning them with Malwarebytes.

We have a blog article detailing this incident which can be found here if you wish to learn more about what happened.  The primary purpose of the attack wasn't really to infect home users, but to infect a wide array of systems to seek out specific targets for an APT attack on certain types of organizations; a tactic likely to become more common now that many businesses and organizations allow BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) in their internal networks and with more and more people working remotely.
