Custom scans

Recommended Posts

If I run a custom scan on a folder containing, for example, 10 files, the scan reports "items scanned" as around 500 ( it varies). This only seems to be happening recently (an update?). is this the corre ct behaviour?

Example attached - this folder had 11 files in it. I presume its scanning some other area of the PC by default at the same time but would be good to understand this.

Hello @Ainsley

This is usually caused by our "linking engine" which means if we find a file that may be related to other files, we also scan those other files.

However if you run mb-check from https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb3_check and upload the zip file it creates, we can take a look

@nikhils Any chance you could have a look at the file?

Thanks

The BFE service is part of your issue here, so let's work on getting that fixed. Can you try the steps below please:

  1. Press Windows Key + R to bring up the run dialog
  2. In the dialog that comes up, type regedit and click Ok
    • Accept the UAC prompt if it shows up
  3. In Regedit, on the left side, double click the folders to navigate to the following path
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BFE
  4. Right click on BFE on the left side and choose Export
  5. Save the key somewhere you can access it later
  6. Right click BFE on the left side again, and choose Delete then click Yes on the popup
    • If you get an error about this, try rebooting into Safe Mode and performing all of these steps. Then reboot back to normal mode before continuing
  7. Reboot your computer
  8. Run the fixit from Microsoft again: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17613/automatically-diagnose-and-fix-problems-with-windows-firewall
  9. Reboot your computer

Correct, this issue was not addressed in our most recent update as it's mostly a cosmetic thing. For reference, what's actually happening here is that we're not only scanning your single file, but also your chrome extensions as it's something new we added in 3.2.2. we will be removing the extra, unrequested scans in the future
