Scan is taking long

Recommended Posts

Hi, I already know my archaic computer has some hardware issues but I was wondering how long is too long for a scan? Mine has been running for a little over three hours - it's not frozen but the 'scan file system' is very languid (so far nothing has been detected). Should I just let it finish up, even though it's taking long? I'd hate to stop it after coming so far.

I'm 99% sure it's a hardware problem as my computer takes several restarts to get up and go + even the Superantispyware quick scan takes about five minutes to complete (in my computer's younger days, it only took about a minute).

Hello, well please tell us your computer system.

And to Superantispyware, this is the time and annoy worth it. It is wastet time to use this "Security programm".

This can not distinguish between cold and warm water. Will thereby say it recognizes too little, up not at all.

I spoke too soon, apparently. My computer just froze. This happened the last time I tried to run a scan several months ago, which is why I haven't tried it until now...for some reason I was hoping it might work this time. Should I shut everything down manually? I can't remember what I did before.

It's a Gateway computer, running Windows 7. Even my go-to computer guru keeps telling me that I need a new computer. ?

Okay. Since everything is frozen except for the mouse, I'll try shutting things down manually before following these instructions.

I don't think there's an actual virus or malware on my computer *knock on wood*, I think it's just the wear and tear that comes with an old computer. I was trying to run a scan because it's been a while since the last scan, not because anything in particular happened.

Once it's up and going again (which might take a while. lol), I'll try your suggestion. :-)

Please do what I mentioned who you can. And wait here for the experts who can help you then. I do not have the right skills to handle your problem. And I'm not a native speaker of your language. I just wanted to give you a first help with your problem. Thank you.

We will need more info on your computer... can you tell us the specs of your computer? OS, memory, hardrive etc, as well as what type of scan you were running, Threat or Custom?

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  4. Press the "Scan" button
  5. This will product two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  6. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  7. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  8. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  9. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  10. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Thank You,

Firefox

Thanks for the reply, Firefox.

I've been at this for so long today, I think I need a break.  I'll give this a go tomorrow.
