What does "Replaced" mean as opposed to "Removed"?

I ran a scan on my PC this morning and uncovered some malware in my registry as well as some PUPs. When I looked at the report after quarantining them, it said that the PUPs and one of the malware were removed, but that several of the malware were "replaced". What does this mean? I just want to make sure that this stuff is gone. Thanks!

Whenever a default system setting has been altered in a way which is potentially insecure/dangerous, we will often detect these items as PUM or Potentially Unwanted Modifications.  In such instances we will replace the non-default/insecure setting/value with the default/safe value.  Also, whenever a system file has been replaced/hijacked by a rootkit or other threat and we detect it, since it might break the system  to remove the file, we instead locate a clean backup copy of the file and replace the infected one with a clean version.  There may be a few other instances where we might replace something rather than removing it, but I believe those are the primary scenarios where we do this.

I hope that helps to answer your questions, please let us know if there's anything further that we can assist you with.
