I am fighting this right now, in September, after Windows Creators Update.  DHCP does not work.  169.254.x.x ip address, no DNS.  I have done everything mentioned here, plus other stuff.  I can't fix it.  All other computers in my house run perfectly.  Just not my HP.

Hello Wendy Smith, I ended up finding my issue to be a root kit virus. From what I know, it is a virus that open as or before windows, so antivirus doesn't find it. (Anyone with more knowledge please correct me if I'm wrong) I ended up needing to wipe my storage and reinstall Windows. Make sure that it is wiped before putting in the windows disk or USB drive, or the virus could move itself there as well. Sorry for the bad solution, but it is all I could find to fix the problem. It has been working since about a week after I posted the original message. As I said before I don't know too much about viruses and what not, but I think this sums it up. Also I will mention that NONE of the solutions previously mentioned worked. Not a single one.

There is no such thing as a "rootkit virus" just like there is no such thing as a Chevy Ford.

RootKits are a type of trojan.  Viruses and trojans are sub-types of malware just like Chevrolet and Ford are types of automobiles.

I wouldn't say I had a rootkit since that wouldn't cause a problem in my PC. I had a rootkit allowing a virus to do what it wanted to my NIC. I said correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't say be a jerk about name technicalities. I had a rootkit and a virus. The same way you have an EVGA GTX GPU. EVGA didn't create the GTX, but it is still their one item. Let's change what I said, valuable help will be appreciated, not snarky replies giving no new knowledge.

We need some logs to assist you.

·  Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs

  1. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  3. Press the "Scan" button
  4. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
    • Leave the log files in the current location, they will be automatically collected by mb-check once you complete the next set of instructions

·  Create and obtain an mb-check log

  1. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  2. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, press "Enter" to accept the EULA then click "OK"
  3. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
    • This file will include the FRST logs generated from the previous set of instructions
    • Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Hello @Wendysmith and :welcome:

I'm going to move your topic to the Malware Removal section of the forum where we can work one-on-one. I'll let you know right now though, that there are many errors on this system and it may not be possible to easily fix this computer. Please read the following.

Please run the MB-Clean tool and remove your 2.x version of Malwarebytes and install version 3.x

Then we'll do some scans with the new engine.

After you've installed version 3 of Malwarebytes please follow the directions below.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes 3 then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes 3 installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the Export Summary button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find, and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know on your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

RESTART THE COMPUTER before going on to Step 3

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Ron

Please uninstall all versions of Java from Control Panel, Programs, Add/Remove

Then run the following.

NOTE: This fix will also run a full disk check on restart of the computer. This may take a few hours to run, please let it run.

Please download the attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop.
NOTE. It's important that both files, FRST or FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on this particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system.

Run FRST or FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
If the tool needs a restart please make sure you let the system restart normally and let the tool complete its run after restart.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please attach or post it to your next reply.

Note: If the tool warned you about an outdated version please download and run the updated version.

fixlist.txt

Thanks

Ron

Sometimes other drivers stop the disk check from running. Please restart the computer one more time. Then run a new FRST scan after the reboot. Make sure you place a checkmark on the Additions.txt check box and post back both new logs as an attachment.

Thanks

I'm going to be on the road for a bit. Will check back later tonight. Please run the following for me.

If you start into Safe Mode with networking, are you able to access the Internet?

Provide System Specifications:

  • Please download Speccy from here and save the installer to your desktop or another location where you can easily find it.
  • Double-click the file to begin installation and follow the onscreen steps to complete the installation and make sure that the checkbox next to Run Speccy is checked before you click on Finish at the end.
  • Once the program starts it will analyze your system, please be patient as it may take a few moments to complete.
  • Once it finishes and none of the areas say Analyzing click on the File button at the top and select Save Snapshot...
  • Save the file to your desktop and click Ok to confirm
  • Go to your desktop and right click on the file you just created and hover over Send to and select Compressed (zipped) Folder
  • Please attach the zip file you just created to your next post

Please try downloading and installing the top driver from this link.

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=Broadcom+BCM943228HMB

If that does not work then let me know what the Make and Model of your computer is. Also, laptop or desktop

Thanks
