(hijack.autoconfigurl.prxysvrrst) + Malwarebytes gets stuck on Threat Scan

Zeeber

Recommended Posts

Hi, I ran a naughty .exe file (the file was naughty; not me - it was meant to be a dumbphone restoration tool for corrupt firmware).

When I run Malwarebytes, it always stalls during the Threat Scan. It gets stuck on one file (maybe a different one each time (?)).

The screenshot I included shows the 8-or-so 'hijack.autoconfigurl.prxysvrrst' entries that show up before it hangs. When it gets stuck, my whole system slows down until I force-stop Malwarebytes.

The other symptom is occasional browser redirects and pop-ups.

Please help. I really appreciate it. This forum helped me once before, years ago.

FRST.txt

Addition.txt

I don't know where to find Threat Scan logs ('Reports' is empty - maybe due to the hang problem (?)). Thanks.

Hello Zeeber and welcome to Malwarebytes,

My screen name is kevinf80, i`m here to help clean up your system. Make sure to run all scans from accounts with Administrator status, continue as follows please:

Anyone other than the original starter of this thread please DO NOT follow the instructions and advice posted as replies here, my help and advice is NOT related to your system and will probably cause more harm than good...

Download attached fixlist.txt file (end of reply) and save it to the Desktop, or the folder you saved FRST into. "Do not open that file"
NOTE. It's important that both FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work.

Open FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt) or the folder it was ran from. Please post it to your reply.

Next,

Please open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • On the Settings tab > Protection Scroll to and make sure the following are selected:
    Scan for Rootkite
    Scan within Archives

  • Scroll further to Potential Threat Protection make sure the following are set as follows:
Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP`s) set as :- Always detect PUP`s (recommended)
Potentially Unwanted Modifications (PUM`s) set as :- Alwaysdetect PUM`s (recommended)

  • Click on the Scan make sure Threat Scan is selected,
  • A Threat Scan will begin.
  • With some infections, you may or may not see this message box.
    'Could not load DDA driver'

  • Click 'Yes' to this message, to allow the driver to load after a restart.
  • Allow the computer to restart. Continue with the rest of these instructions.
  • When the scan is complete if anything is found make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (that will automatically check all detected items), then click on the Quarantine Selected Tab
  • If asked to restart your computer to complete the removal, please do so
  • When complete click on Export Summary after deletion (bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard.
  • Wait for the prompt to restart the computer to appear, then click on Yes.
  • After the restart once you are back at your desktop, open MBAM once more to retrieve the log.

To get the log from Malwarebytes do the following:

  • Click on the Reports tab > from main interface.
  • Double click on the Scan log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
  • Click Export > From export you have two options:
Copy to Clipboard - if seleted right click to your reply and select "Paste" log will be pasted to your reply
Text file (*.txt) - if selected you will have to name the file and save to a place of choice, recommend "Desktop" then attach to reply

  • Please use "Copy to Clipboard, then Right click to your reply > select "Paste" that will copy the log to your reply…

Next,

Download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes onto your Desktop.

Or from this Mirror

  • Right-click on AdwCleaner.exe and select user posted imageRun as Administrator (for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 users)
  • Accept the EULA (I accept), then click on Scan
  • Let the scan complete. Once it's done, make sure that every item listed in the different tabs is checked and click on the Clean button. This will kill all the active processes
  • Once the cleaning process is complete, AdwCleaner will ask to restart your computer, do it
  • After the restart, a log will open when logging in. Please copy/paste the content of that log in your next reply

Next,

Download Microsoft's " Malicious Software Removal Tool" and save direct to the desktop

Ensure to get the correct version for your system....

32 Bit version:
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyId=AD724AE0-E72D-4F54-9AB3-75B8EB148356&displaylang=en

64 Bit version:
https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/confirmation.aspx?FamilyId=585D2BDE-367F-495E-94E7-6349F4EFFC74&displaylang=en

Right click on the Tool, select “Run as Administrator” the tool will expand to the options Window
In the "Scan Type" window, select Quick Scan
Perform a scan and Click Finish when the scan is done.

Retrieve the MSRT log as follows, and post it in your next reply:

1) Select the Windows key and R key together to open the "Run" function
2) Type or Copy/Paste the following command to the "Run Line" and Press Enter:

notepad c:\windows\debug\mrt.log

The log will include log details for each time MSRT has run, we only need the most recent log by date and time....

Let me see those logs in your next reply, also tell me if there are any remaining issues or concerns.....

Thank you,

Kevin....

Thank you very much.

I ran FRST with fixlist and attached fixlog.

I started Malwarebytes, selected those settings and started the scan. It has got stuck at Scan Startup Files (it has stayed at 3177 items scanned for over 30 minutes).

6 threats were identified, similar to my screenshot from the first post (I attached another screenshot).

It is still running but it doesn't look like it will progress. My whole system has slowed down - browsers, programs and files take about 1-3 minutes to open but are then usable.

Even though my system is very slow to respond, CPU usage stays at only around 10%.

I didn't do any further steps (Adw, Microsoft tool) since the Malwarebytes hasn't completed.

Try the following:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit from here

  • Double click to start the extraction to a convenient location. (Desktop is preferable)
  • Open the folder where the contents were unzipped and run mbar.exe
  • Follow the instructions in the wizard to update and allow the program to scan your computer for threats.
  • Click on the Cleanup button to remove any threats and reboot if prompted to do so.
  • Wait while the system shuts down and the cleanup process is performed.
  • Perform another scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit to verify that no threats remain. If they do, then click Cleanup once more and repeat the process.
  • When done, please post the two logs produced they will be in the MBAR folder... mbar-log.txt and system-log.txt

Thanks,

Kevin...

Run RogueKiller again, when complete use the Delete option on all found entries....

Next,

Download RKill from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

There are three buttons to choose from with different names on, select the first one and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7/8/10, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • A log pops up at the end of the run. This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this in your next reply.
  • If you do not see the black box flash on the screen delete the icon from the desktop and go back to the link for the download, select the next button and try to run the tool again, continue to repeat this process using the remaining buttons until the tool runs. You will find further links if you scroll down the page with other names, try them one at a time.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
Next,

Try Malwarebytes again, see if a threat scan will complete...

Post all produced logs, also give an update on any remaining issues or concerns....

Thanks,

Kevin...

I found a thread from Dec last year of people who had the same problem with Malwarebytes stalling. A workaround for someone at the time was to use an older version of the software. So now I'm wondering if your instructions have worked to remove the malware and it's just Malwarebytes not working with my computer or something.

Set windows up for "Clean Boot" mode, full instructions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/929135

Basically all none MS services are disabled, see how your system runs in that mode. Now try threat scan with Malwarebytes again...

If clean boot allows Malwarebytes scan to complete it is now a process of elimination to find which non MS service(s) was/were affecting Malwarebytes...

Go through the process again, this time with all MS services hidden again enable the top half of non MS services, re-boot and see if Malwarebytes scan works, if still ok the top half can be left enabled.

Repeat again, enable so many of the bottom half then re-boot. Continue until you locate the problem service(s). A process of elimination, a bit long winded but worth the effort. Let me know the outcome...

Obviously if clean boot makes no difference we`ll have to think again....

Thanks,
Kevin...

  • Double-click on mbam-check.exe to run it, it should then open a log file
  • Please do not copy and paste the entire contents of the log into your next post, instead, please attach the log CheckResults.txt file which should now be located on your desktop to your next post.
  • Attach the log to your reply

I tried Malwarebytes version 2.2 from bleepingcomputer and it completed the scan and found no threats.

Then I ran Adwcleaner and it found 2 PUPs'PUP.Optional.Legacy' which I cleaned (see log)

Then I ran Adwcleaner again and it was clear.

Then I ran MSRT and it found nothing.

mb v2 scan results.txt

AdwCleaner[C0].txt

AdwCleaner[S1].txt

mrt.log

So seems I'm clean? Now I will uninstall mb v2.2, run mb clean, and try to reinstall Malwarebytes version 3 and see if it will complete...

Yes I agree with you, I`ll just leave this thread open for now. Can you go to this forum: https://forums.malwarebytes.com/forum/41-malwarebytes-3/

Open a thread and explain the problem where the threat scan freezes, also attach logs from MB check https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mbam_check

Maybe also  post link back to this thread, I know this is taking up your time but is well worth locating what the problem is...

Regards,

Kevin..
