New instal will not run

Recommended Posts

Hello all and really hope you can help me, all help is very much appreciated.

So I have got a new gaming PC that is less than a month old. A couple of nights ago the mic on my gaming headset kept muting and the volume going to zero. It would do it every few seconds at random intervals. After a bit of research it would look as if I have a malware infection. I installed malware bytes to help but unfortunately after install it will not open. If I double click the icon I can see the icon then pop up in my taskbar at the bottom for a split second then disappear again.

I have found your ''Having problems using Malwarebytes? Please follow these steps'' thread however I am having difficulty in following it. I am not sure what version I have either but surely it will be the latest. Please see below for details.

(Unable to do 1 and 2, if I click the download FRST link then explorer unexpectedly crashes every time) If I click restore session it will close again.

(Unable to do number 6 as I cannot find a path similar to this)

I have done full virus checks with defender and all comes back clear.

Please help :) Thanks all

Thanks for the fast reply. Before I noticed your post I ran it in safe mode and managed to get the diagnostic logs. I have followed your steps above and now I am getting a warning message when I click to load the software.

Please see attached diagnostic logs and screen shot of warning message.

Thanks for the fast reply :)

Hi @GavsterD

Your logs indicate an infection.

Please follow the instructions below to remove the infection.

1. Download version of Malwarebytes Anti Rootkit (MBAR)

2. Run the exe.

Click ok to extract.

3. After extraction MBAR should start.

Click next.

4. Update by hitting the update button.

After the update completes hit next.

5.  Hit the scan button. Please let it finish the scan. This rootkit may slow your machine down and MBAR may look like it will freeze but it will continue to scan. Please allow it to do so.

6. Once the scan is complete, press the cleanup button and allow MBAR to remove what is found and allow your computer to restart. Please don't click on the window why cleanup is running. This may delay it even more.

7. Malwarebytes functionality should be restored.

Can you let us know if that solves the issue?

Hello @GavsterD

I'd also recommend you do a final scan to make sure nothing left over on the system.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes 3 then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes 3 installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the Export Summary button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find, and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know on your next reply.

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.
