[resolved] Malwarebytes uninstalled itself after update

Recommended Posts

So as the title says; Malwarebytes uninstalled itself after I updated it to the latest version. It was there until I restarted my computer as it asked me to after finish the update.  and this is not the first time it has happened! I hoped this issue was fixed by now, but no.  So my question is am I the only one who has expirenced this?

usually I just install malwarebytes again, but it's really really annoying and slightly time consuming having to search through mail etc to find my product key or contact support to retrive it ._.

Yes. This happened to me. I just sent a ticket. I'm not tech savvy, so glad to hear that this may be a product issue rather than a malicious attack. Can you tell me how I can safely get the product back on my machine? I don't have any other protection on that machine, now, and am afraid of using it to connect to the Internet.  I'm using another laptop right now - and, oddly, I didn't get a product update notice when I just logged in with this machine. Thanks for any advice you may be able to offer.  Little old lady, here, with not much technical expertise.  Sigh...

Hello and Welcome!

On some computers its having the issue your seeing, you are not alone per say... Usually though if you just download the installer from the link below and install it the registration information should already be there.

Thank you very much.  I will do as you suggest - and hold my breath that I don't encounter any viruses, etc., when I access the internet to download the file.  This has me wondering whether I should have some other security program on my laptops as backup. Will look into that once I get MB safely back in place.  Thanks, again.  I appreciate your help!

Your quite welcome... there should be no issues with accessing that link I gave you as it goes straight to the download for MB3, no need to surf the net before hand.  Also It is a very good idea to have a good robust antivirus program installed as well.

Thank you, Firefox and Porthos.  I was able to download MB from that link, using Mozilla Firefox to connect to the Internet. It appears to have downloaded, correctly, and I ran a scan; not threats found.  However, Firefox will no longer run.  I used Chrome (now unsupported on XP) to download/install a new copy of Firefox, but it still keep crashing when I try to launch it.  I'm sure this Firefox problem is related to the reinstall of the new MB product, but don't know how to fix it.  Not having a good computer day, here.

Porthos - I will download Defender on this Windows 7 laptop.  Thanks for the recommendation.  There is no longer an option for the XP.  Too bad; that XP machine has been more reliable for me than any of the newer Windows machines that I've used.

The windows 10 version of Defender is part of the OS. You can choose any AV you wish for your Win 7 computer.  I don't endorse any 3rd part AV programs because it would be right to do so on these forums.

For your Firefox issue. Uninstall it completely and then install a fresh new copy (if you install over the existing copy you are basically installing the new one with the existing issues in that Firefox profile)

Oh, that is excellent information.  Thank you very much; I didn't realize this would be the case.  I'll log  back onto the XP and give that a whirl. Thank you, again, for the wonderful support.  This forum is exceedingly helpful!

I understand completely and respect your integrity.  I am grateful for the acknowledgement that I should have additional protection for back-up purposes and will do a bit of research as to what may still be available for the XP.  Again, I appreciate your assistance!

Just throwing my hat in the ring as also having Malwarebytes completely remove itself after installing the latest update through its own interface.

I was able to install the latest version using the link in this thread.

Thanks for the info. I am sure devs are looking at the issue.

Dear Firefox,

Well, I did as you suggested and completely uninstalled Mozilla Firefox, then downloaded and installed a fresh copy.  I am still unable to launch my browser, and Mozilla is even unable to send a problem report.  To make matters worse, I've discovered that Mozilla is not the only software that will no longer run.  I've got at least 3 other applications that are being blocked from opening.  I am at my wits end, and I still haven't heard back regarding the original ticket that I submitted.

Do you (or anyone else, here) happen to know if there is a way that I can uninstall this Malwarebytes update and then reinstall the version that I had on my machine before this debacle?

Thanking you in advance for any suggestions that you may be able to offer.

@ljw please perform the steps below and then post your results in its own topic (start a new topic/post) so we don't interfere with the original poster here....

Let's try and get some logs first so the team can review them and see if they can tell what may be causing your issues....

  1. FIRST: Create and obtain Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs
  2. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  3. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  4. Press the "Scan" button
  5. This will product two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
NOTE: These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  6. NEXT: Create and obtain an mb-check log
  7. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  8. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  9. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  10. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Thank You,

Firefox

I just had this happen 09-03-17 with an update.  it was strange never had it happen before.  I found out the cause in my situation.  passing this on may help others. check your settings protection tab:

enable self-protection module & enable self-protection module early start  set to off than run the update.

Thanks.  My early start setting is already off. Still, I'm thinking that the software should be able to run even with those setting turned on, so I'd like to see MB take some responsibility for fixing this rather than just shutting down features and then calling it a closed issue.  Glad that you are up and running, again.  Thanks for sharing your experience!

I would love to submit logs etc if someone  ask me for it, not sure how much that will help :/

Hello @Zalmez,

If you still have the same setup available could you run mbcheck for me and attach the zip file that it creates on your desktop please: https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb3_check

Other useful logs are the MB3 Uninstall logs. Those can be grabbed from the %temp% directory and they have the following naming scheme: Uninstall Log 2017-08-28 #001.txt.

Do you know what Version of MB3 you had before you ran the upgrade?

Thanks in advance for the info!

Hi  @ljw

We do have a bug logged for this already. It is in fact an issue with Self-Protection on XP. Once there is dev involvment I will let you know what the turnout is for that issue.

Thanks!

This is not just an XP issue. I had this happen on a 7 install. Something like this is inexcusable for a security program, as many people aren't even going to notice and are going to be left unprotected. But considering the poor programming I've seen from MWB and the complete lack of interest in fixing it when pointed out, I'm not at all surprised to see this happen. MWB is great at what it does at the core, but it has some really lousy framework surrounding that core.

And as a side note: two separate anti-bot checks to register for these forums is ridiculous, just pick one.

Did you fix it yet with a reinstall?

1. Download the latest MB 3 installer from : https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mb3
2. Run the installer on top of your existing product. (Note you don't have to uninstall anything, just run the installer again)
