Recycler Virus and Backdoor.Bot removal

Recommended Posts

I'd like some assistance with removal of both Backdoor.Bot and Recycler Virus. I believe they were passed along by a friends thumb drive.

Here's my latest HijackThis log, followed by my latest Malwarebytes log:

Hi,

First of all, please update MalwareBytes, because the databaseversion is outdated.

  • Start MalwareBytes and click the Update tab. There click "Check for updates"
  • In case you can't update the database via the update option, please download and install the database from here. Only do this when the update option doesn't work.
  • Once the updates are downloaded, perform a quick scan again.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log, then we'll proceed from there with new steps.

Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi, I did as requested. Malwarebytes found Backdoor.Bot and I clicked remove. Immediately my Norton Anti-Virus popped up with a Recycler Tojan Virus alert.

Here's my latest HijackThis scan:

Hi

Do scans come up clean now? I assume you let mbam delete what it found and rebooted afterwards? Also, I hope Norton didnt interfere with mbam removal here as that may also explain why it comes back all the time. That's why it may be a good idea to disable Norton during the mbam scan, this to make sure it doesn't interfere with removal.

The same applies for teatimer, I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.

When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.

If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.

How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.

After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.exe to your desktop.

Then run ResetTeaTimer.exe.

This will only take a few seconds.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi,

So I disabled Norton AV, as well as the Teatimer, reset teatimer too. Malwarebytes scan found the Backboor.bot again. I removed it and rebooted. MWB rescan found Backdoor.bot again. Here's latest hijack this log and MWB log:

Hi,

This *may be one of those read errors in mbam - but please do the following as well to make sure..

* Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix in your next reply.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix..This because Security Software may see some components ComboFix uses (prep.com for example) as suspicious and blocks the tool, or even deletes it. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.

Hi! I noticed that ComboFix deleted some Recycler files. I did a Malwarebytes scan afterward and it came up clean! Does that mean ComboFix got rid of my problem? Here's the log and just in case, there's the latest Malwarebytes log after it:

Hi,

Yes, this looks OK again. I'll add detection for this one to mbam asap.

I see you have Viewpoint installed...

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /

Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

I deleted Viewpoint Media Player successfully. And I tried to run the Combofix /u but for some reason I'm getting a cannot find Combofix error. I did delete the shortcut from my desktop prior to trying this Run request. Will it effect my computer negatively if ComboFix is not uninstalled? Also I think the original errors are gone! Thank you for all your advice and assistance, Miekie!

No, so don't worry :)

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.

Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
