Malwarebytes not starting.

Recommended Posts

I don't know what the protocol is here, so, rather than adding my experience to someone ellse's thread I am starting this one.

This is a new problem.  When I switch the computer on the dektop displays a notice saying that Malwarebytes can not be started ... or some such thing.

I have uninstalled the program and cleaned the system with the mb_clean tool and reinstalled a fresh copy.  I still get the same result.

A pop up message said to attach this file .....

mb-clean-results.txt

  1. Download FRST and save it to your desktop
NOTE: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit
  2. Double-click to run FRST and when the tool opens click "Yes" to the disclaimer
  3. Press the "Scan" button
  4. This will produce two files in the same location (directory) as FRST: FRST.txt and Addition.txt
    NOTE:
These two files will be collected by the MB-Check Tool and added to the zip file for you
  1. Create and obtain an mb-check log
  1. Download MB-Check and save to your desktop
  2. Double-click to run MB-Check and within a few second the command window will open, then click "OK"
  3. This will produce one log file on your desktop: mb-check-results.zip
  4. Attach this file to your forum post by clicking on the "Drag files here to attach, or choose files..." or simply drag the file to the attachment area

Check "winmgmt" service or repair WMI.

Your WMI is damaged.

Please download the following zip file fixwmi.zip and save it to your computer. Then open and copy the file from within the zip file to your desktop. Do not run it from within the zip file.
Once you have copied the batch file to your desktop, then right click over it and select "Run as administrator"

That should run for a while and then restart the computer for you. Once it has restarted, please run a new FRST scan and make sure you place a checkmark on the Additions.txt check box and attach back both new logs.

The BEST way I have found to fix the problem of it not starting is to RIGHT CLICK the Malwayrebytes ICON on the bar and QUIT MALWAYREBYTES, wait about a minute and then restart it. DONE.

The poster has other issues that that fix won't cure. That is why we review the diagnostic logs and work on a cure.

Okay, that's what I mean. For some reason it does not sound like it ran. It should have fixed a lot of things silently, but then it should have also restarted your computer automatically.

Let me update the tool to add some logging to it so we can determine what's going on. If I've not replied to you within the next 12 hours with an update, please send me a private message reminder.

Cheers

Ron

Okay, here is an updated batch file. Please save the file to your computer. Then open the zip file and copy the batch file inside to your desktop. Then close everything. Then right click over the batch file and choose "Run as administrator" and let it run. It should automatically restart your computer.

When done, please post back the log file "repairwmi_results.txt" which should be on your desktop now.

fixwmi2.zip

Thanks

Ron

Great, that's good news.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs as an attachment when ready.

STEP 01

  • If you're already running Malwarebytes 3 then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • If you don't have Malwarebytes 3 installed yet please download it from here and install it.
  • Once installed then open Malwarebytes and check for updates. Then click on the Scan tab and select Threat Scan and click on Start Scan button.
  • Once the scan is completed click on the Export Summary button and save the file as a Text file to your desktop or other location you can find, and attach that log on your next reply.
  • If Malwarebytes won't run then please skip to the next step and let me know on your next reply.

STEP 02

Please download AdwCleaner by Malwarebytes and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on the program and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Your PC should reboot now if any items were found.
  • After reboot, a log file will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

STEP 03
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

Ron
