EaseUS Partition Manager trial is malware, IMO

Recommended Posts

TL;DR : Problem fixed. EaseUS PM trial software should probably be blocked as malware.

****************************

A day or two ago I needed to format a hard disk drive. Windows 8.1 wasn't being very cooperative, so I googled "Partition Software" and installed the first program listed. This was a mistake.

The software 'free trial' turned out to be a teaser that doesn't actually allow you to do anything, and - worse - after uninstalling it I couldn't actually delete the installation file from my download folder.

It turns out that EaseUS has a bad reputation in these parts. However the current download (38.2 MB) is not detected as malware by a scan with Malwarebytes (Premium) 3.1.2

[EDIT] Oh, wait. I've got rid of it now.

It turns out that when you 'uninstall' the trial it leaves a bunch of files and .dlls in the

C:\Program Files (x86)

directory. After deleting those, I could also delete the file in the download folder.

Hi PaulBlay :)

I used EaseUS Partition Manager in the past, on top of other EaseUS products and from my experience, they are from being malicious. A program isn't automatically considered as malicious because it doesn't uninstall properly and/or leave files behind when uninstalled. If so, a lot more programs (legitimate ones that you use every day) would be flagged as such. What you can do is report that behavior to EaseUS so they can investigate it and hopefully fix their uninstaller :)

It leaves files behind that stop you from deleting the downloaded installation file. I later found out that after removing the 'left behind' files I could also finally delete the last 'chormium' file - left over from the actual malware OpenCandy that installs with CheatEngine. I'm referring specifically to the trial version download, btw. It's quite possible that it's well behaved once you pay for it.
