Repeated problem: Web & Malware Protection off, cannot turn on

Recommended Posts

This is a repeated problem. I get an alert that I am not protected and find that Web Protection is off and when I try to switch it on all I get is 'Starting'. Malware protection simply cannot be switched on. Happened last week and had to download program, delete existing setup and reinstall.

Also when I click on 'Check for updates' the program appears to download something but immediately advises me to check again for updates.

I closed the program and re-opened. No effect.

I am sorry but this appears to be an identical problem to the one which caused such a stir back in May. Basically I am paying for a product which does not do what is says on the tin. Repeated failures like this are frankly unacceptable.

Interesting, I see where it's failing, but not why. Can you please try the following:

  1. Open Malwarebytes
  2. Go to Settings -> Application
  3. Scroll down and turn on Event Log Data
  4. Go to Settings -> Protection
  5. Try to turn on Web Protection
  6. Wait 30 seconds
  7. Run mb-check again and upload the new zip file

Turning on Event Log Data will give us a bit more data as to what's going on behind the scenes.

I turn off every night so every day it is rebooted and nothing has changed.

Not the same thing.

You're running Windows 10, which has a feature known as Fast Startup enabled by default. When you "shut down" your computer, you're not fully shutting it down. You're essentially putting it into a low power hibernation state that allows the machine to startup faster the next time. If you want to fully shut down your Windows 8/8.1/10 computer, you need to use the restart option; not the Shut Down option. This will shut down your computer fully and of course restart it as well.

I have had to use restart for other reasons in the last 24 hours. Generally, Windows 10 seems horribly unreliable with various programs taking an age to load and all this on a Dell laptop barely three months old. Overall, I hate it but there you go. I can restart again but am not sure it will make any difference as it didn't earlier.

OK, everything seems to be in order but this was after my laptop crashed and the OS Recovery system determined I had errors in the partition table and with Windows 10. The partition table error was repaired, the Windows 10 error not. The system wanted me to do a complete W10 re-install which, apart from the personal stuff, also means I lose any software added since I purchased the machine in April I presume. So, as it is it is still working I have decided against that for the time being. Anyways, MB3 now appears to be stable and working again. Will see how that develops.
