Lots of unknown network Activity

Recommended Posts

When browsing google I got a screen saying they detected unusual activity and I had to tick a box to show I wasn't a bot. I then ran scans but it showed nothing.

However, in my network activity I'm getting a ton of unknown activity, even when I don't have a browser open, they are coming from svchost.exe. When I open Chrome the amount explode.

Tons of random IP addresses and strains of letters and numbers and sites like Amazonaws, cloudfront.net, lan.ntl.com, deploy.staticakamaitechnologies.com, msn.bot.

I ran a normal scan, and a rootkit scan, I tried safemode with networking but it messed up my PC, a clean boot and it made it worse. I then used a restore point and the issues still persists.

I have no idea what to do.

Hi Applemilk :)

svchost.exe processes that connects to the Internet aren't necessarily malicious. svchost.exe is the Service Host process, which means that Windows Services are ran through it. If a service needs to fetch data from the Internet, it is normal for it to connect there. Amazon AWS, CloudFront, Akamai, etc. are all websites that are used by developers to host data or act as a relay for programs that connects to the web. This is normal behavior, and doesn't mean that your system is infected.

If you are on a shared IP address from your ISP, this can happen from time to time. I see this happening once or twice a month at my workplace. This is because a lot of traffic is being sent to Google via what it sees as a single IP address, therefore it thinks it's spam/bot/etc. and asks you to validate the fact that you're a legitimate user.
