In another thread these instructions are given to some one with a problem.

* Download and install CCleaner

* Double-click on the downloaded file ccsetup220_slim.exe and install the application.

* Keep the default installation folder C:\Program Files\CCleaner

* Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS

* Start the CCleaner program.

* Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run (basically the very top, uncheck it)

* Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"

* Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files

* Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.

* Click OK to any prompts

I was just wondering if someone could explain:

* Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run (basically the very top, uncheck it)

CCleaner installs with all the items (13 of them) in Registry Integrity checked. So when would you run CCleaner that way, and when would you run it with all the items in Registry Integrity unchecked? What's the difference?

Well, the registry unchecking step is really unneccisary so long as you only use the cleaner part of the program, and don't click the registry tab. I think the reason they tell you to uncheck the registry section is just to guarantee that it won't be run accidentally. The registry cleaner is largely unneeded and usually won't fix anything, while occasionally causing problems.

That being said, after running HJT from a folder called 'new folder' and then later deleting it, if I ever tried to put a new folder on my desktop and then move it, rename it or delete it, windows would pop up a warning telling me that some programs may not work correctly (for some reason it didn't realise that HJT had been deleted, and still associated it with folders called 'new folder')

By running Ccleaner's registry cleaner under and admin account, and allowing to remove anything related to HJT or 'new folder' I fixed the problem, and it hasn't seemed to have caused any side effects.

HJT leaves an entry in Add/Remove Programs (Programs and Features in Vista) for just this reason, to remove the registry entries .

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Still, it shows that registry cleaners can still be useful in certain situations.
