Slow PC - help me find out why

Recommended Posts

What operating system? and how do you use your computer (Browsing the net, playing RPGs, etc.)?

When is it slow? When you are on the internet or when you are doing something else?

Quick advice:

1- Clean out temporary files, junk files, unwanted programme startups, etc.
(Run CCleaner (do not use the registry cleaner, especially if you have Win10), run Junkware Removal Tool, run Adwcleaner, run Microsoft disc cleanup, defrag your hard drive or trim it if it's a solid state drive).
(Check what is starting up when you boot, look in Windows Task Manager or CCleaner 'Tools' menu. - remove any you don't need to start automatically).

2- Check for any malware that may be on there.
(Run a Windows Defender/MSE scan, run a Malwarebytes scan, etc).

3- If slow when connected to broadband then run a broadband speed checker.

All the above are basic checks and cleanups that you should do regularly- some everyday, some weekly or monthly. How often depends on how you use your computer.

Other cleanup and malware scan tools are available, some good some rubbish, the ones mentioned above are used and trusted by many.
