Hey, you guys were lifesavers for me about eight months ago with my DAW desktop. This time my wife's laptop has something going on. About four days ago it suddenly started slowing down dramatically. I tried to run Win Cleaner Utility Suite to clean out the registry but something would disrupt the process right in the middle. So, I ran a full scan with MBAM and it found about 8 instances of adware with a low threat level that I had it remove. That didn't really help. So I ran a full virus scan with AVG and it found nothing. I ran Spybot and it found some more adware that I removed and it still is running slow. I hope you guys might be able to help.

Here's the latest MBAM quickscan logfile:

Sorry for the long delay, if you still need help please let me know

No problem about the delay AS, I understand and appreciate that you're willing to help in the first place.

Her computer appears to be operating better at this time. I unloaded a lot of software that she wasn't using and continued to run MBAM, AVG and Spybot, and the computer been operating much faster. I don't want to take up your time unnecessarily as I'm sure that there are others with more dire problems.

Still, let me just give my thanks for being there and being willing to help out!

  • Root Admin

Please go ahead and run this scanner and post back the log and I'll take a look at it and see if I can find anything lurking there.

Thanks.

Download
DDS
and save it to your desktop

Disable any script blocker if your Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware has it.

Once downloaded you can disconnect from the Internet and disable your Ant-Virus temporarily if needed.

Then double click
dds.scr
to run the tool.

When done, the
DDS.txt
will open.

Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt

  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • Please include the following logs in your next reply:
    DDS.txt
    and
    Attach.txt

Well I don't see any obvious Malware there. I don't like the items running from the Temp folder but they're not Malware.

You need to check and update your Adobe Reader as older versions have compromised code.

STEP 01

Disable the Spybot Tea Timer - DO NOT continue until you've disabled the Tea Timer

Disable Teatimer

First step:

  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on
    Resident Protection
, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure
    Resident Protection
    is now
    Unchecked
. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.

  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on
    Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click
    Mode
    , choose
    Advanced Mode

  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click
    Tools

  • then, also in left panel, click
    Resident
    shows a red/white shield.

  • If your firewall raises a question, say
    OK

  • In the
    Resident protection status
    frame,
    Uncheck
    the box labeled

  • OK
    any prompts.

  • Use
    File, Exit
    to terminate Spybot

  • Reboot
your machine for the changes to take effect.

Do a scan with your Anti-Virus and if all is well then go ahead and re enable your Spypot if you like.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should
Create a New Restore Point
to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.

Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.

Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.

Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to
"roll-back"
to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is

:
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Programs
    >
    Accessories
    >
    System Tools
    and click "
    System Restore
    ".

  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on
    START
    >
    RUN
    > and type in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    and click OK

  • Choose the radio button marked "
    Create a Restore Point
" on the first screen then click "
    Next
    ".

  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "
    Create
    ".

  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

  • Then use the
    Disk Cleanup
to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.

  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Run
    and type:
    Cleanmgr.exe

  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "
    Ok
". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

  • Click the "
    More Options
" tab, then click the "
    Clean up
    " button under System Restore.

  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "
Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?
    "

  • Click
    Yes
    , then click Ok.

  • Click
    Yes
    again when prompted with "
Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
    "

  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

  • On the
    Disk Cleanup
    tab, if the
    System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores
entry is available remove them also.

  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.
