Malwarebytes Scan Stuck on Checking for Updates

Hello,

I have downloaded the Malwarebytes for Windows as my old Toshiba running Windows Vista is running very slowly.  I have tried to run a scan, but every time I attempt to do so, it gets stuck on Checking for Updates.  It has been 20 minutes twice and the program still won't proceed.  I am using Chrome to access the Internet on this computer and it is fine albeit slow - Explorer seems to not want to connect.  Also, when I tried to run Google Photos Backup, it could not connect.  But, I know that my wireless network is running fine (3 other computers, multiple ipads/iphones working fine).  The other forums that I looked at with similar circumstances (ie stuck on updates) seemed to have specific fixes for individual cases.  Can anyone help?
