Greetings :D .

Since the updates are not incremental and it actually downloads the full database each time it's updated it's size will generally be around 2-3 megabytes. However, if a new version of the program itself is released between now and then it would be approximately 3-4 megabytes for the new version's installer, plus 2-3 megabytes for the updated database. So at max, I would say somewhere between 5-7 megabytes :) .

oh thanks a lot

Avira does, I can't list all the programs & give you details on there downloads. Theres a laptop I have and did not use it for 2 weeks, the download was appx: 2344kb (about the same size it always downloads.) I suggest you grab all the updates you can for your AV program & mbam! Yesterday we had a user catch a virut.. Only cure for that is a format of the main drive. He lost pic's, bookmarks, has to download all his programs again, address book, ect.. I hope this helps..regards...

EDIT: this was posted a month ago: http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=16967

Right now the database isn't too large, so downloading the whole thing isn't that big of a task. With antivirus software it's a different story, they aren't like Malwarebytes' which is only designed the catch the threats missed by most other security software, antivirus software is designed to try and catch all threats (a task that is obviously impossible, hence the need for tools like MBAM to fill in the gaps), but this makes their databases of threats much much larger so downloading updates incrementally for AV's is essential.

Hello, hope you don't mind me adding to this post and asking. How come the size fluctuates, sometimes the new update is smaller than the previous even without new program updates?

Hi Utopian  .

Don't mind at all <_< . To answer your question, it can be for several reasons, but primarily I believe it would be:

  • Addition of heuristic detections for certain infection types, meaning a specific signature is no longer needed for each variant, thus reducing the database size
  • The removal of false positive detections from the database

I believe it's primarily the first one though  .

That clears things that MBAM does NOT grow until it fills up the whole HD. One more great characteristic <_<
