Windows 10 freezes on start

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

First of all I need to congratulate you for the nice product. Using for years and I happy with it. Although I m facing problem some time now.

Problem started after installing version 3. It was about same time with Windows 10 creators update so I'm not sure if it's the reason. Anyway my problem is that windows 10 freezes some seconds after starting up. If i login right after login screen comes up it freezes on desktop else it freezes on login screen. The freeze time is always around 5 minutes. I can tell this cause pc clock freezes but i see time on phone. If i uninstall mbam pc works fine.

I have no other a/v solution installed but the default windows defender built-in windows 10.

Thank you.

Hello @dseferlis,

You are correct in your assumption that the problem is with Malwarebytes and not the Windows 10 Creator's Update. I was experiencing the same problem (see my post here). Until the Malwarebytes team properly resolves the issue, you can work around it by delaying the protection startup for 15 seconds. One user reported on my original post about the same issue that this only causes the freeze to be put off until the system is fully booted, but that is not an issue that I am experiencing.

Thanks for the answer David. Saw this solution days ago and tried even with 120 sec delay but with no luck. The only thing happened was to delay the freezing also! :)

Hello and Welcome!

Not sure if Malwarebytes was installed before the Windows upgrade.  It has been know that at times during the Windows Upgrades, sometimes the security software gets corrupted. Lets see if a clean reinstall helps you case.  If it does not then please post the logs mentioned below.

Let's try this first.... (It is recommended that you de-activate your Malwarebytes first before un-installing or using the clean removal tool - the tool can only backup the license info for MB3 so if you have MBAM v1 or v2 you have to de-activate it manually)

  1. Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - Malwarebytes mb-clean tool (NOTE: After uninstalling with the mb-claen tool you will be asked to reboot. Once you reboot it will ask you if you want to re-install Malwarebytes, you can select YES (it will download the latest version) or you can download the latest version manually (currently v3.1.2.1733 ) to re-install from HERE)
  2. If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: mb-check-results.zip, FRST.txt, Addition.txt)
  3. NOTE: More info about the latest Malwarebytes 3.1.2 HERE; MB 3 User Guide ONLINE; MB 3 User Guide PDF; MB 3 FAQ: Malwarebytes 3.0 - Frequently Asked Questions

Please let us know how it goes.

Thank You,

I was the guy who suggested in the other thread that the freeze only gets delayed. It seems that you have found the same. I have found that the delay occurs after most restarts, but not all. So it may be that the delay will pop up again for someone who thought they had solved it.

It will be interesting to see if the support team can locate anything from your logs. They have been unsuccessful with my logs. In fact, I would like to hear from anyone who got a solution for the delay problem through the support team examining their logs. If so, I might get some pointers. Meanwhile, I am back to version 2.2.1.1043.
