Problem with mbamtray.exe

Recommended Posts

I have this problem for a while now. If I let mbam start with Windows or manually  : no tray icon and sometimes even no internet. I have to restart the computer.

mbam was installed on the E:\ drive, uninstalled and reinstalled on the C:\ , which is a quite small SSD, but disabling hibernation gave me more space. That did not solve my problem.

My system is windows 7 Home premium 64bit sp1.

I think I need some advice on how to solve this.

Thanks in advance.

This morning, same thing again. No tray icon, mbamtray application on the customize window was present with "show icon and notifications". This did not happen at "every" startup after shutdown, rebooting did usually the trick.

Opened the task manager : mbam32.exe service” starting”, after reboot : “running”.

ran : services.msc and set mbamservice to automatic instead of manual.

After shutdown I was able to start malwarebytes, I hope this solves the problem.

Hello and Welcome

Lets try the steps below to get a fresh re-install, if it does not correct your issues, then give us a fresh set of logs...

Let's try this first.... (It is recommended that you de-activate your Malwarebytes first before un-installing or using the clean removal tool - the tool can only backup the license info for MB3 so if you have MBAM v1 or v2 you have to de-activate it manually)

  1. Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - Malwarebytes mb-clean tool (NOTE: After uninstalling with the mb-claen tool you will be asked to reboot. Once you reboot it will ask you if you want to re-install Malwarebytes, you can select YES (it will download the latest version) or you can download the latest version manually (currently v3.1.2.1733 ) to re-install from HERE)
  2. If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs (the 3 logs are: mb-check-results.zip, FRST.txt, Addition.txt)
  3. NOTE: More info about the latest Malwarebytes 3.1.2 HERE; MB 3 User Guide ONLINE; MB 3 User Guide PDF; MB 3 FAQ: Malwarebytes 3.0 - Frequently Asked Questions

Please let us know how it goes.

Thank You,

Firefox

Hello Firefox,

When I started the computer malwarebytes service started, the systray icon did not show, although it was right configured as to show icon and notifications.

I used mbamclean again, don't know how many times already, reinstalled it the correct way and yes the tray icon is showing and for the moment I left it to start with windows and see what happens next time.

In my opinion there is/was some kind of difference since after reboot it always worked but this is simply annoying !

Thanks for your help, I'll let you know if it happens again, hopefully not

If it does happen again, then come back to this thread and post all the logs requested in step #2 above so someone from staff can review then and see what may be going on...

Thanks

Thank you, I will but so far no problem !

Sorry to say that it happened again.

mbamservice was started so was the tray icon process.

I added the necessary reports, before rebooting.

It means it loads on reboot not on startup and also when the systray icon is not visible I cannot open malwarebytes !

Can you access your Windows Security Center? It looks like there's an error when trying to communicate there, and that may be where our problem is originating. To try accessing it, just open up your start menu and type Check Security Status. Then please post a screenshot of the page that comes up

Thanks for your reply.

I include the screenshot, I realize that the configuration for malwarebytes action center probably must be : "apply the best WAC settings based on your system" and not "never register in windows action center".

My other computers are configured the same way, with OS windows 10 and that does not give me a problem.

Thanks for your reply.

This morning I started the computer, mbam : not is systray. First a blue wheel on the internet connection followed by a red x. The recommendation popped up to check network and sharing centre, clicked nothing happened, tried the control panel did not work either, rebooted the computer and everything started ok.

I did what you asked, mbam tray icon disabled in the customize window and ran mbamcheck, results attached. I suppose that this is what you meant by “verify that the systray is not displaying but running in the background”.

Can you please follow the steps below to grab a memory dump

  1. Open Task Manager
  2. On the Processes tab, find mbamtray.exe
  3. Right click mbamtray.exe and choose Create Memory Dump
  4. Once the process finishes, it will show you the location of the dump (should be %temp%\mbamtray.dmp)
  5. Go to that file in Explorer, right click the .dmp file and choose Send to -> Compressed (Zipped) folder
  6. Upload the zip file in your reply. If it's too large for the forums, please use wetransfer.com to email it to dcollins@malwarebytes.com

Thanks!

Just an update : After disabling mbamtrayicon from showing before rebooting, re-enabling it afterwards, I had to reboot only once. I also updated my network adapter driver. So far for a few days in a row now, there is no problem with mbamtray. Just hope it stays that way.
