How to be notified of program updates?

Recommended Posts

Probably I haven't tagged and/or overlooking something...

Is there a way to get a notification once there is a program update? Other applications either automatically update, or show some pop-up telling me about a newer version.
Coincidentally discovered that v3.1 has been released whereas I was still at 3.0x

Thanks.

MB does this as well but updates are metered out a little at a time.

Have you manually installed the new version?

Thanks, have just downloaded mb3-setup-consumer-3.1.2.1733 and intend to install it shortly.
MB didn't warn me about a version update - I checked settings just now and 'Notify me whenfull version updates are available' is enabled.

It goes out to users a little at a time. If you want to stay ahead of the game just watch the forum.

Also as a new version gets pushed out if issues crop up they turn off the upgrade server till things are fixed.

Ah, right!

I just noticed (version history), there were no releases between 3.06 and 3.1x  latter being released only 3 days ago.
I wrongly assumed there might have been one or two releases in between which then would have been bypassing me.
Sorry for the confusion... ahum..

One of my computers running MBAM Premium still has not been offered either 3.0 or now 3.1.  But the people here say it is being "metered" out.  Sorry, but that is bunk. Obviously there is a problem.  My other computers were all offered 3.0, albeit three months after its release.  Computer number four, still nothing.  Good thing I know enough to check for program updates.  Most users don't.

They just started to send out 3.1.2 a couple days ago.

The last update before now was 3.0.6 / January 25, 2017

I guess 2x. many people had turned off programs in that version to avoid 3 till the "bugs" were fixed.

I suggest you backup your key and deactivate Ver 2 and reboot then follow the instructions below.

I thought I was pretty clear.  I have four computers with MBAM Premium.  MBAM is configured exactly the same on all.  Three of them were offered the update to 3.0 about three months after it was released.  The fourth was not.  And still has not been offered it.  I'm not talking about 3.0 to 3.1.  I'm talking about 2.2 to 3.0.

I understand how to manually download the newest version but why should I have to when the program is supposed to notify me of updates?  It is clear that there is a problem with some users not receiving the update from 2.2 to 3.0 (see above).  And please don't tell me the update (3.0) is being metered out.  While that may be true, it should have been received by now on my fourth computer and it has not.

Sure for some computers. Please Just upgrade them using the instructions I posted above and move on if it works after that.

MBAM needs to understand that there is a problem with their program not notifying its user that there is a program update available instead of either 1) telling people the update is being "metered" out or 2) download the update manually.  I first notified them about this more then a month ago and they have done nothing about it.

How many users have no clue there is an update and won't know since the program isn't telling them?  Pretty bad for a security program.

Can't you, or don't you want to understand what the problem is? Seems to me bru is clear enough in pointing out what is wrong.

I didnt have a clue there was an update, and only stumbled upon it here today because I wanted to know if my MBAM (2 Premium) would protect me against this latest threat. I can assure you, and Porthos in particular, that I am extremely displeased finding out there is already several months (!!!) a brand new version with ransom ware protection, and I was NOT notified AT ALL!!

I suggest both you and @bru start separate topics and give your details and we let the staff work directly with each of you. This is the weekend and there are not much staff around so you might not get answers until Monday.

Sorry, I not any help to you all.

There is no issue with our metering. On top of that, our metering to users on 2.x is different than that of our users on 3.x. The 2.x product is still very good, and while we have been working out the kinks that people are seeing in 3.x, we didn't want to inform too many 2.x users that there was a new version available if it may end up causing issues for them. This is why we meter out. As more users go from 2.x to 3.x, we expect there will be some issues (whether it's technical issues, or people not fully understanding some aspects of the new product), so we stagger the update over time. If you're on 3.x already however, we want to make sure you get the latest version since the updates to our 3.x product are designed to fix defects that have been identified and may impact people who are actively using the product.

As the 3.x product gets better with every release, we will start to meter out the update to more users on the 2.x product.

I don't buy it.  I've said it for close to two months.  Three out of four computers offered 3.0, roughly three months after it was released.  Fourth computer offered NOTHING...still. It's not metering, its a problem.

@bru we can check this if you'd like. Can you please perform the following steps and we can verify that update checking is working  properly on that fourth machine?

  1. Open Malwarebytes
  2. Go to Settings -> Application
  3. Turn on the option for Event Log Data
  4. Click Install Application Updates
  5. Let the check complete, then click Ok
  6. Turn off the option for Event Log Data
  7. Run mb-check from https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb3_check
  8. Upload mb-check-results.zip file from your desktop in your reply

With this information, I should be able to pull the proper details out of the log and we can look where the update check is happening and make sure it's not failing.
