Serious problems with 3.0 and higher

We upgraded 2 Windows PCs to Malwarebytes version 3.0.6.1469.  One runs just fine, the other shows "can not connect service".  I removed the 3.0 version and reinstalled 2.1.6.1022; which shows version 2017.04/19.07 available and encouraged me to "update now".  I did.  After it installed, I tried to run it and got the "can not connect service" message again.  

I have run all of the recommended diagnostics I can find, and have now reinstalled 2.1.6.1022.  

I have paid for the premium version, and we have run the program for years with no issues until this.

I saw no other threads of this nature in the forum.  Does anyone have ideas, information, or fixes?
