Mbam-clean keeps removing new installs of Mbam

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am having an issue with a machine so for troubleshooting I wanted to do a clean reinstall of MBAM. Yesterday I downloaded and ran the Mbam clean tool. After a reboot, I reinstalled the latest Mbam from the website mb3-setup-consumer-3.0.6.1469-10103.exe. Upon any reboot, Mbam is uninstalled. This has happened twice now. How do I remove Mbam clean or stop the tool from removing Mbam at every reboot?

Thank You

User problem. It only runs ONCE and never again unless reinstalled.

KenW, Thank you for the reply!

I disagree with you however. I am the only person who has touched this machine since I used the tool yesterday. I used the tool, installed mbam. Upon reboot for windows updates, Mbam uninstalled. I reinstalled Mbam again, Now after another reboot last night. this morning I see Mbam is again uninstalled. The tool is definitely doing something and I only ran it the once.

If the issue continues then let us get some logs from your system

Hey Advanced, Thank you for the reply.

Maybe this helps with the situation. When I ran the tool yesterday I saw behavior different from what the forum instructions show. I bolded and underlined my injections.

  1. Download the latest version of MB-CLEAN by clicking the link above
  2. Close all open applications
  3. Double-click and run mb-clean.exe
  4. A prompt with an option to clean up the system will appear: Yes and I clicked yes
    • Yes - will proceed with backing up the license key (Malwarebytes 3.x only) and initiating the cleanup process
    • No - will exit the utility
  5. Once the cleanup process is completed, a prompt will appear: Sort of. I was prompted to reboot but no prompting of downloading or installing Mbam
    • Yes – will proceed and post reboot you will be prompted to continue with the downloading, installation and activation of latest version of Malwarebytes 3.x
    • No – will exit the utility and you will not be prompted (post reboot) to download, reinstall and re-activate (not recommended)
      • We recommend rebooting immediately. Additionally, stopping at this step is not recommended and will most likely not resolve your issue(s).
  6. Upon reboot, a prompt will appear: No prompt appeared. Just the log file creation on the desktop
    • Yes - will download, install and activate the latest version of Malwarebytes 3.x
    • No - will exit the utility and the cleanup process is complete
      • Choose this option if you do not want to download, install and activate the latest version of Malwarebytes 3.x
    • A log file ("mb-clean-results.txt") will be on your desktop

Hello @glitchyrichy

You mentioned in step 5 : Once the cleanup process is completed, a prompt will appear: Sort of. I was prompted to reboot but no prompting of downloading or installing Mbam

You will only see the download prompt  after you reboot.

As @AdvancedSetup please post the mb-clean-results.txt file from your desktop.

Thank You,

Log attached. I never saw a prompt after reboot. The log file was there, but no prompts from Mbam clean.

That does not appear to be a complete log, but that's okay.

How did the removal work this time? Was it able to remove the program okay, and were you able to get Malwarebytes installed and running now?

I will reinstall Mbam again now and restart a few times to see if it sticks.

Hello @glitchyrichy

I think what was happening was you reinstalled the product manually after reboot before the MB-Clean message to download the product popped up.

Run a clean install of the product and you should be fine.

Also one thing I would suggest go to your task scheduler library and if you see an mb-clean task just delete that for now. (One scenario is that task exists and is not getting deleted cleanly as a result every time you reboot your system it launches mb-clean)

In the future please us the latest mb-clean tool located at : https://downloads.malwarebytes.org/file/mb_clean

Thank you,
