Hi

Yesterday Zonealarm popped up an internet access request by "pridl.exe" . I didn't recognize this and denied it, then went to look it up using Firefox. Each Google link I clicked got redirected to various sites through Windowsclick.com. Managed to find that it was harmful and searched for the file, then ran AVG which found and fixed it.

A month ago I had to reformat on an unrelated problem and hadn't gotten around tio reinstalling Malwarebytes and Windows Defender. Windows Defender installed and works OK. Malwarebytes seemed to install but then the install window froze near the end and I used the task manager to exit. Tried installed in safe mode too, but no good. Tried renaming the install file, as seen in other threads, but no good. Installing in safe mode didn't work either. Hijackthis does not install either.

Looking through threads here, I d/l RootRepeal, but get the error "Could not read the boot sector. Try adjusting the Disk Access Level in the Options dialog." Didn't know how to adjust the disk access level, so I stopped.

Windows Defender found Win32/FakeCog (action taken - remove) and SettingsModifier:Win32/PossibleHostsFileHijack (action taken - clean).

I've scanned with AVG Free and it found nothing.

advice?

thank you

Nevermind. Went ahead and formatted and started a new install of XP

I couldn't keep my computer going for more than five or ten minutes without it freezing completely and taking two, or three reboots to get into windows.

Sure wish i knew what caused it

thanks
