Malware protection won't start on for me

Recommended Posts

I did not uninstall and re-install malwarebytes because I did a clean install yesterday and quite frankly I cannot remember how many times I had to do this and I really thought the last component package would finally be the one to keep. On the other computers I still have the 1.0.50 and 1.0.69 version, this gives me a headache as well but normally quitting and restarting mbam was enough to have it to start protection. With this new version I have to reboot to have the icon on the taskbar, the icon cache was cleaned as well.

Please run the following for me.

Please run the following steps and post back the logs when ready.

STEP 01
Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

  • Shutdown your antivirus to avoid any conflicts.
  • Right click over JRT.exe and select Run as administrator on Windows Vista or Windows 7, double-click on XP.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next reply message
  • When completed make sure to re-enable your antivirus

STEP 02

adwcleaner_new.png Fix with AdwCleaner

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save the file to your Desktop.

  • Right-click on adwcleaner_new.png icon and select RunAsAdmin.jpg Run as Administrator to start the tool.
  • Accept the Terms of use.
  • Wait until the database is updated.
  • Click Scan.
  • When finished, please click Clean.
  • Your PC should reboot now.
  • After reboot, logfile will be opened. Copy its content into your next reply.

Note: Reports will be saved in your system partition, usually at C:\Adwcleaner

STEP 03
Download Sophos Free Virus Removal Tool and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click the icon and select Run
  • Click Next
  • Select I accept the terms in this license agreement, then click Next twice
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish to launch the program
  • Once the virus database has been updated click Start Scanning
  • If any threats are found click Details, then View Log file (bottom left-hand corner)
  • Copy and paste the results in your reply
  • Close the Notepad document, close the Threat Details screen, then click Start cleanup
  • Click Exit to close the program
  • If no threats were found, please confirm that result.

STEP 04
Please download the Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. You can check here if you're not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens, click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press the Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please attach it to your reply.
  • The first time the tool is run, it also makes another log (Addition.txt). If you've, run the tool before you need to place a check mark here.
  • Please attach the Additions.txt log to your reply as well.

Thanks

I attached the log files, except Sophos, did not find anything after 2 hours scanning., which means I gave up.

-jrt removed tmp files smart defrag, which is more annoying than Auslogics, it does install their uninstaller without asking.

-ADW : again remnants of Auslogics already removed by mbam (PUP) + DiskDoctor checker : was not detected either by mbam or KIS

The question is how can any malware or virus make it to the computer protected with mbam and KIS, it should be stopped, the router firewall is also enabled.

What else can be done, probably not using the internet and yes I'm careful !

BTW I did a full KIS scan yesterday : no threads found.

Thanks for your help, and..... mbam icon is on the taskbar again, but I doubt this will be the end of the problems that one of a sudden may reappear, sadly enough.

Let me have you do a clean removal and reinstall of Malwarebytes please.

Please read the following topic and then run the Malwarebytes Clean Removal tool mb-clean

https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/196955-malwarebytes-mb-clean-tool/

The download link for the tool is:  https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean

Restart the computer when done and reinstall Malwarebytes 3 with the latest build again.

Here is the link for the latest installer

Thank you

When the computer started this morning, it was the same problem, no icon. Went to the windows settings and found out that the icons were not displayed properly (mbam had the volume icon), so I cleaned the icon cache once again. But that's a windows problem !

Now I did what you asked and did a clean install, for the moment everything started normally, even the icon !

I just hope there will be a new stable version, with no problems, just like before when malwarebytes deserved a star !

Thanks for helping.
