As instructed in a support email from Malwarebytes Support, I installed the following:

*Malwarebytes version: 3.0.6.1469*
*Component package version: 1.0.75*

It fixed the issue yesterday, but again this morning, the web protection was off and cannot be turned on.

@jru - Did you reboot and see web protection off?

Could you also turn on Event Log Data under Application Settings and attempt to turn on Web Protection again?  This will add additional logging to MBAM.

Then some fresh logs from you may help us understand what's happening with your installation.  Could you run the following tools, as well as get your mbamservice logs:

  • FRST
    • Will generate Addition.txt and FRST.txt.
  • mbam-check
    • Will generate mb-checkResult.txt.
  • C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService\logs

@jru - I've spoken to our developers and they agree that running mbam-clean and reinstalling is the best course of action.  We will begin researching why this can happen in the first place, but I think we've collected the logs we need.

Please let us know if reinstalling after running mbam-clean resolves your issue. :)

Just a quick update.  I did what @cchilderhose suggested and last night uninstalled malwarebytes, ran the malwarebytes clean tool, then reinstalled the latest version (1.0.75 component package).  Today, everything seems to be working.  I'll keep monitoring, but that might have done it.

I was normally running the clean tool, but the instructions that support emailed for this version specifically said "Install over the top of your current installation of Malwarebytes 3.0.6."

Maybe a change to the email sent could remove this line and include a link to the clean tool?

I'll post if anything changes, but hopefully this has been taken care of.  Thanks for the suggestion @cchilderhose, as well as your assistance @Jekko

Another update -

It just did it again this morning.  While I am not sure if they are related, it occurred shortly after windows defender completed a full scan.  The windows defender scan completed, then less than 2-3 mins went by and the message from Malwarebytes appeared in the corner of my window, stating that I was not fully protected.  Now, the  Web Protection is stuck in the "Starting..." state.

It had been working since last Thursday.  I do also notice that no scan has been run for the last 5 days through Malwarebytes.  I wonder if it just happens after something runs a scan?

Yes, my MBAM v3.0.6.1469 just started doing the same thing. Last time this happened, because it seems to happen a lot, I used the cleaner app and completely uninstalled it and then reinstalled (that is the standard answer to all problems with MBAM). That appeared to work and it lasted a whole month or so, but alas, its now doing the same thing again. Too bad they can't seem to find what is causing this because this program used to be damn good; I've used it for years.

I followed the same process the last time I got this working.  So it still must not be fixed.

I agree, I've always liked this program.  Hopefully it gets sorted out.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've found something that seems to have worked since my last post. If you haven't tried this, give it a shot. There are two steps but if the first step works for you as it seems to have worked for me, then you need not go on to step 2.

https://support.malwarebytes.com/customer/en/portal/articles/2734677-malwarebytes-3-0-real-time-protection-layer-turning-off-?b_id=15026

I'll be back here to report if it should start acting up again.

Hope it works!

Rick
