JoeT Posted February 8, 2017 ID:1099913 Share Posted February 8, 2017 (edited) Has anyone looked at other options besides MalwareBytes? I've been a premium user for several years now and would gladly jump to something else that uses less memory. I've read enough of the threads to know there is no miracle cure for the high memory use. If there is a reasonable chance that generating the various log files will do some good I'll go through the trouble. But from what I can tell it generally makes no difference and is allot of effort. I just did the upgrade to 3.0.6 and saw that the consumption seemed to go down so I was hopeful. But today all records were broken and this new level of insanity was reached during what I presume was the routine scan. 790 MB!!!! This is CRAZY. W10 Pro 64, Intel i3-3240 @3.4 Ghz, 8GB Ram Things did settle down to 'only' 400 MB of memory after awhile. Something is seriously out of whack if this is somehow the expected normal behavior. Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted February 8, 2017 Root Admin ID:1099925 Share Posted February 8, 2017 Hello @JoeT and welcome to Malwarebytes Yes, the high CPU during a Threat Scan is normal (many requests to use more resources to complete scans sooner, unfortunately, they did not leave in an option for others to reduce resources during the scan. Would have been nice as a user to have both options so one could make a choice. Hopefully, that will be in one of the next program updates.) However, your memory usage is well above normal. If you'd like me to try and help you correct this then yes, I'll need to get some logs. The log scans take like less than 2 minutes so is not a huge time burner. Please read the following and post back the 3 requested logs as an attachment. Diagnostic Logs Thank you Ron
JoeT Posted February 11, 2017 Author ID:1100984 Share Posted February 11, 2017 Thanks for the reply. Am giving this some time to see if I can get used to it. High usage is occurring during scan when machine is turned on at start of the day. Even though CPU usage is high it seems to be low priority and goes down when I do something on the machine. The scan seems to run for about 15-20 minutes. Then it settles down to about 250 meg of memory. That is a lower baseline than before the upgrade to 3.0. I would not call my machine clean. It was upgraded from Win7 to Win10 a few weeks ago and had some fat installs on in like multiple versions of SQL Server and Visual Studio. Could it make sense that either an upgrade to Win10 and/or having some big software installs on the machine cause some issues? If need to see logs first than I understand. JoeT Posted March 5, 2017 Author ID:1106548 Share Posted March 5, 2017 (edited) I can understand if this thread is now off the radar as it's been idle a few weeks. But I finally have some files to upload. I would have done so sooner but was scared of running Farbar because Norton said it was bad and kept on deleting it. Recently found a Downloading Farbar Recovery Scan Tool, Norton says NO post that made me willing to take the risk of turning off Norton and run it the correct way. The pattern still holding of very high memory usage during what I believe is the daily scan. I've gone so far as to turn Malware off when trying to load up a big app like Visual Studio and then turn it back on when these big apps are finished loading. Any insight would sure be appreciated. Thank you. MB-CheckResult.txt Addition.txt FRST.txt Edited March 5, 2017 by JoeT
Root Admin AdvancedSetup Posted March 6, 2017 Root Admin ID:1106614 Share Posted March 6, 2017 Hello @JoeT The computer has a bit of junk but does not appear to be infected. As for Malwarebytes using a very high CPU rate while scanning, yes that is true and in the current version cannot be prevented. Our Dev Team is working on an update for this but it probably won't be ready for a while still. You could try a clean removal and reinstall to see if it helps some, otherwise, you'll need to wait for the update that corrects such high CPU usage during a scan. If you want to try the clean removal and reinstall please follow the directions below. Please read the following topic and then run the Malwarebytes Clean Removal tool mb-clean https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/196955-malwarebytes-mb-clean-tool/ The download link for the tool is: https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb_clean Restart the computer when done and reinstall Malwarebytes 3 with the latest build again. Here is the link for the latest installer https://downloads.malwarebytes.com/file/mb3/ Thank you Ron
JoeT Posted March 7, 2017 Author ID:1106803 Share Posted March 7, 2017 Thanks for the prompt reply. I'll think I'll give the reinstall a try and see how it goes.
