Have lost connection to Internet upgrade server

The message said  I need to check my Internet settings - how do I do this, and what do I look for ?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

I am currently running Vista on an HP Touch smart computer.

I did have it running initially, but deleted the software and reloaded - obviously I must have done something to the system during this time.
