Today I got fooled into clicking a link that didn't go to the page it was supposed to go.  I noticed right away (before the page even displayed) and immediately closed the browser.

Since I already had Windows Defender running, use Chrome instead of IE and have a few extra defenses, I realize the chance of infection is minimal but not zero.  Being pretty paranoid, I immediately downloaded MalwareBytes to run a scan using a second antivirus.  I've done this once or twice over the years and never had a problem.  But this time soon after I installed Malware Bytes the computer started freezing up and I ended up having to boot in safe mode and remove it so that I could continue with my safety scans using other tools.

The likely reason for the freeze up is a conflict with some of the other software I run on this computer.  The likely culprit is probably one of:

- Windows Defender

- Carbonite (probably not, since the problem persisted even after I disabled the backups).

- Stablebit Scanner (checks drives real-time for hardware failures).

- Stablebit Drivepool (think of it as a software-level RAID that doesn't go bad when the RAID controller goes bad).

But since those things are pretty core to how I run Windows 10, I cannot really remove them to run the Malwarebytes scan.

So... my alternative is to somehow setup and boot from an external drive so that I can run Malwarebytes and scan all of the internal drives.  But I couldn't find good instructions on how to do this, even though it must be a pretty common practice.  Can someone please point me to a link for a document that describes the steps to do it?

Thanks.

Good news:  I used Norton's bootable scanner and it confirmed I have no malware.

Bad news:  MBAM definitely has a conflict with one of the above technologies.

Worse news:  Not a single reply in this forum with a solution.  Not even from the staff.  Speaks pretty poorly of the product.

Given the above... I'm downgrading MalwareBytes into my "don't bother with it" category.  It is too bad, I always had a pretty good opinion of it.
