Cannot install/run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Recommended Posts

My computer (Windows XP Home SP3) became infected with something a couple of days ago, and is defying everything I've tried to fix it. Symptoms include: Links from Google results pages in IE8 (but not Maxthon) being redirected elsewhere; multiple instances of iexplore.exe appearing in the Task Manager when I'm not using IE8; several processes that normally run on startup fialing with errors; and computer lockups while trying to run lengthy online anti-virus scans etc.

My normal AV program is AVG8 (free), and it is detecting nothing but a few tracking cookies. Same with the free Norton Security scan.

On trying to install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, the installation procedes to the point where the progress bar has completed and the text says 'Finishing installtion', but the installer then locks up and doesn't complete - I have to kill it from the Task Manager. As the files appear to have been installed, I have tried running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware despite the installer not closing properly, but while it produces the mbam.exe process in the Task Manager, no window opens and the process remains at 0%.

I've tried to run RootRepeal, but the computer immediately crashes to the BSOD on every attempt.

I have also tried all these things in Safe Mode, and had exactly the same results.

System Restore is not working - it lets me get to the confirm screen after selecting the restore point, but nothing then happens when I click on 'next' to confirm.

Any help appreciated.

This post and the situation has been superseded.

While waiting for an answer, I made several more attempts to get Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to run, and eventually did so after renaming both the installer and the installed .exe.

Once running, it identified the (hidden from Windows Explorer) files of the infection, and deleted all but one of them, needing a reboot to complete the removals. However, on rescanning after the reboot, one file was still there. I tried the remove-reboot again, with the file still there on rescan, and then a third time. On this rebootm Windows would not restart, displaying only an error messgae. It wouldn't restart in normal mode, last known good, or even Safe mode.

With no other access to another computer or the internet, I was forced to use the system rescue option that copied the C: drive contents into a backup directory and reinstalled Windows from a Rescue partition.

Well, at least the infection is gone; but I am now having to re-upgrade and install everything from the last 4 years. But there is one huge problem. I REALLY need access to the contents of my old user's documents and settings folder, which does exist in the backup that was made. But having restarted with Eindows XP from scratch, even as the administrator I'm not allowed access to that directory. This is a disaster. Does anyone know a way to get access in these circumstances?

Hi David,

Well sorry for the delay but there are just too many people to help right away. Had you been a bit more patient we may have been able to prevent the restore but we'll never know at this point. All I can do at this point is to recommend that you have up to date Anti-Virus software and Anti-Malware and keep up to date on the Microsoft Critical updates.

Get an external USB drive and backup all of your user data. Not only Malware but hardware issues can cause loss of data when you least expect it, so best to have a backup and be prepared.
