Exploit protection 'off'

Recommended Posts

I installed Malwarebytes 3 (3.0.5.1299 version), over an existing MBAM 2 install (premium, with lifetime license), having already uninstalled MBAE (premium) in preparation.
On booting, I get the 'Real-Time Protection layers turned off' notification, with the button to 'Turn On' (which does nothing).
If I right click on the Malwarebytes icon in the taskbar, it says 'Exploit Protection: Off' (and I can't turn it on from there).
If I open Malwarebytes, it says on the Dashboard 'Exploit Protection: On'.
I haven't tried uninstalling / mbam-clean.exe / reinstalling yet, as I wanted to report the issue.

I created some custom exploit protected applications (e.g. SumatraPDF), which created ok, but I then can't turn protection on for them (the slider won't move from 'Off' to 'On').
I'm aware of the known issue that 'Custom anti-exploit shields are not enabled by default.', but does that also mean we can't enable them on ourselves yet ?
If custom shields aren't working yet, would we be better off switching exploit protection off in Malwarebytes 3 and also running MBAE ?

I'm on Windows 10 Pro x64, Version 1607, Build 14393.576
I have attached a zipped copy of C:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService\logs

@MarkBevan Installing 3 over 2 brings with it many problems. I suggest deactivating your license, then uninstalling followed by the v2 clean removal tool. Then reboot, and remove any residuals in /ProgramData, /Program Files, /Program Files (x86). It wouldn't hurt to check /AppData/Local and /AppData/Roaming as well. Reboot again and run CCleaner for any leftover registry entries. Then run the v3 installer, and cross fingers (or cross fingers and run the v3 installer... I'm not sure which is better).

Thanks for your reply Telos.

Last night (before you replied) I did most of what you said i.e. deactivated the license, then uninstalled & reinstalled following the  MBAM Clean Removal Process 2.0 (I didn't remove any residual files manually, or run CCleaner).

I'm happy to report, that all is well now.

  1. The Malwarebytes icon in the taskbar no longer has the warning exclamation mark on it and no longer says 'Exploit Protection: Off', when I right click on it.

  2. The Malwarebytes Dashboard now says that 'Real Time Protection - Exploit Protection' is On.

  3. I'm now able to create custom exploit protected applications (e.g. SumatraPDF), and can turn protection on for them (the slider will now move from 'Off' to 'On').
I guess this conforms that the known issue which says Custom anti-exploit shields are not enabled by default  just means that you need to turn them on manually, after you create them (they stay on after a reboot).

On booting, I still get the 'Real-Time Protection layers turned off' notification, but that's a known (and minor) issue Occasionally, after installing, you will see a “protection layer is off” warning while the protection is being or has already been automatically turned on. (We have a fix for this coming soon!)

I can thoroughly recommend the MBAM Clean Removal Process 2.0 as it solved all of my problems !
