Chrome will not start since MWB3 install

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am running

Win 10 Pro 64 bit build 14393.447

MWBAM 2.2.1.1043

MWBAE 1.9.1.1261

with no issues, but i uninstalled and replaced with MWB3.0.4.1269, now Google Chrome will not start

If I disable MWB3, chrome starts fine

I have lastpass, ublock and the google office apps running in chrome  Version 55.0.2883.87 m (64-bit)

I have attached logs from farbar recovery if they are needed.

Many thanks

Hello Draven and thank you for supplying the logs in advance :)

If you enable the protection for Malwarebytes and only stop the AEProtection, will Chrome load?  I'm trying to narrow down which component is affecting this.  Also, does it only affect Chrome, or are all browsers affected?

Hi Ried,

It seems only chrome is affected, as I can open IE and use without issue.

I have tried to start the web protection and malware protection, but they just sit at 'starting'

Thanks Draven.

Have you tried adding these Malwarebytes files to Sophos Exclusions?

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MbamPt.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\assistant.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMWsc.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbamtray.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMService.exe

Does the Real Time Protection ever start for you?

What happens with Chrome, if you turn off AEProtection?

Hi, added exceptions as above.

I can reboot and start all protections no issue, but then cannot use chrome

if i reboot weith all disabled, i can use chrome

once i have used chrome, if i enable protection, i can no longer use chrome and i have several chrome showing running in task manager, even though you can see no chrome running on taskbar.

if i close MWB3 using icon near clock, i can then launch chrome

Thanks Draven,

I'm wondering if this is similar to other browser issues we've seen with Sophos.  Would you mind seeing if the following applies to your version and if it helps?

Log-in the Sophos Home dashboard https://home.sophos.com/login

# On the left of the screen click on the computer you would like to set exceptions for

# Scroll down to exceptions section

# Type in the following folder path in the text box and hit enter

** C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes

Next,

# Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

# Click on Settings > Exclusions tab

# Click on Add Folder

# Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\ or C:\Program Files\

# Locate the Sophos folder and click once to highlight it

# Click Select Folder

# Reboot your computer

Hi Ried,

I tried all the exceptions as listed above, still the same issue.

I also installed MWB3 on my surface pro 4, and got the same chrome issue. the surface was also running sophos home, so i uninstalled sophos, rebooted and the issue is fixed.

I noticed on my home PC, if I closed chrome there was always at least 1 chrome process still running, that I could not close.

After I removed sophos home from my home PC, the issues with chrome stopped, and there were no chrome processes left showing in task manager after i closed chrome.

Confirmed you have issues running alongside sophos home.

I will install Kaspersky trial and see if that is ok, will buy that instead if it works!

Cheers

Thanks for the info, I'll notify our QA and have them look into this for Sophos.

Kaspersky is also giving us problems. Seee these topics regarding Kaspersky:

https://forums.malwarebytes.org/topic/191818-mb-30-exploit-protection-kaspersky-chrome-issue/#comment-1079692

They are working on integrating the fix that has already been tested in the standalone beta MBAE. In the meantime, rather than completely disabling Exploit Protection in MB 3.0, another temporary work-around would be to go to Settings > Protection > Real-Time Protection > Manage Protected Applications and then turn off protection for any browsers you use.

May I recommend Eset Nod32?  I have used that for the past 2 years and just love it.
