Concerned that MBam 3.0 is actually not updating

Recommended Posts

I installed MBAM 3.0.4 the other day. Today I check the systray icon and it says Up to date. However when I bring up the GUI all all I see is the narrow green progress bar going across the screen right below Updates:Checking. The progress bar never stops. I have no idea what definitions this software is even using.

I closed MBAM down and tried to restart it. Said that it could not connect to the service. Waited a bit. Started it up. shows that Updates: Current. Click on Current it briefly changes to Checking and then back to Current. Is there a reason why you have removed the actual version of the updates from this screen? I have lost count on how many pieces of software I have seen that has taken this approach only to discover that infact they are not up to date. I regularly use the definition versions to visually verify that indeed the software is up to date.

Good thing I only installed it on one machine here. Still really think that MBAM should not be dumbed down as much. I prefer the information that version 2.x on mouse over shows in its systray icon. It clearly shows the definition version rather than the 3.x non informative "Current".

Seems that the app somehow has issues after a while doing the update check properly and needs to be restarted. Once I did the check for updates completed properly apparently. I say apparently because I have no clue whatsoever what definition version the app is using but at least it got out of the checking for updates step this time around.

Is this current because 1.0.680 means nothing to me off hand whereas 2016.12.09.etc right off the bat shows that its a definition released sometime today. Just saying that the more information you provide your end users up front via your naming scheme the less doubt or confusion that they will have.

Hello--

Anyone stuck with updates saying "Checking..." can you please reboot and try the update again?  We believe that should fix the issue.

Also, you can always easily verify the version of installed packages by going to the About screen in Settings.

I restarted a couple of times to see if that helps. It doesn't really help except make it not check for updates. I noticed I have more of a problem checking for application updates rather than virus definitions. When I click that application updates button it really freezes up the updating process.

While it is scanning, in my case it updates just fine most of the time. I really think that the application updates is one of the main culprits here.

Actually at this moment, 1.0.682 is the latest.

I appreciate your comments though on version info. I get what you're saying. I think it depends on what sort of user you are -- novice, expert, etc.  Typically (at least when updates are running smoothly) most novice users really only want to know whether the app is up to date or not.  Ideally Malwarebytes should be updating automatically so you don't have to worry about this.  You should only be notified if there is a problem.  Would love to hear from others about this, too.  :-)

So it sounds like you're not seeing updates stuck on "Checking..." on the dashboard but rather are seeing issues when clicking Install Application Updates.

Have you tried recently checking for updates?  What happens now when you click Install Application Updates?

This is the first time that I tried that. I have had the problem several times it just runs in a loop while checking. I did not initiate the check for updates.

2016.12.10 makes much more sense than 1.0.682 without a list of update numbers & dates it means nothing. jmho

Since I installed Malwarebytes 3.0.4.1269, I have not been able to check for update. The update package version is still at 1.0.547.
I have followed all the instructions here (Quit and restart Malwarebytes; restart the computer; reinstall Malwarebytes) and I still unable to update the package version.
When I click on Check for Updates button, the status goes from Check for updates to Checking and then to Check for updates without actually updating.

To clarify - this is during the scan portion, correct?

Can you please attach a copy of the MBAMService.log located in the following folder?
c:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService\logs

In order to locate the file, you'll need to be able to see hidden folders.

I'd also like to get a look at what else is running on this machine and check for possible conflict.

This next scanner will not make any changes to your machine on its own, nor will it divulge any personal information that may compromise your security.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/ and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system.

**After you click the Download Now 64-bit, or the Download Now 32-bit, another page will open — DO NOT CLICK ANY ADDITIONAL 'download now' buttons, just wait and look toward the bottom of your browser for the option to Run or Save. Click Save.

•Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to the disclaimer.

Note: If you are prompted by Windows SmartScreen, click More info followed by Run anyway.

•Click the Scan button.

•When the scan has finished, it will save 2 logs  in the same directory the tool was run from.  Please attach the following logs:

Addition.txt

FRST.txt

Thank you for the logs.

Please add these files to your Kaspersky Anti-Virus exclusions list

 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MbamPt.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\assistant.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMWsc.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\mbamtray.exe
 C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes\Anti-Malware\MBAMService.exe

Try again to update - is it still getting hung up?

I would certainly prefer that the definition file name reflected the date/time of issue........

@chytons  I'd also like to see the contents of the following folder:

c:\ProgramData\Malwarebytes\MBAMService\config  <-- right click this folder and select 'Send To' > Compressed (zipped file)

Please PM me that folder and also please include the link to this topic in that email.  I reply to many topics a day and it would save me a lot of time trying to find your post again. :)
