Scans halt after a certain point

I had posted a thread a few days back regarding that Malwarebytes would randomly stop scanning in the general area of "Scanning Startup Files". I made a clean uninstall and reinstall of Malwarebytes only for the same issue to arise. I then tried using the FRST.exe to provide a log, only for that to hang and do the exact same thing that Malwarebytes would do, it would hang after a certain point and slow down the entire point to the point where I have to shutdown, which for some reason usually takes ten to fourty minutes after it starts hanging. Though for some reason shutting down after running FRST.exe caused my computer to bluescreen while it was shutting down, I didn't catch what was there unfortunately. I tried using a scan from Windows Defender only for it to hang as well, I haven't tried doing a scan using anything else. Other than scans just outright hanging and causing the entire computer to run slowly, I haven't noticed any other issues other than hanging during scans, it happend suddenly as well, as I had run scans before this originally occurred and had not run into any issues.

Hello Lyklor and welcome to Malwarebytes,

See if you can run the following:

Download RKill from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/rkill/

There are three buttons to choose from with different names on, select the first one and save it to your desktop.

  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7/8/10, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • A log pops up at the end of the run. This log file is located at C:\rkill.log. Please post this in your next reply.
  • If you do not see the black box flash on the screen delete the icon from the desktop and go back to the link for the download, select the next button and try to run the tool again, continue to repeat this process using the remaining buttons until the tool runs. You will find further links if you scroll down the page with other names, try them one at a time.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Next,

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Alternative download option: http://www.techspot.com/downloads/6731-farbar-recovery-scan-tool.html

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system (32 bit or 64 bit). If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

If your security alerts to FRST either, accept the alert or turn your security off to allow FRST to run. It is not malicious or infected in any way...

  • Double-click to run it. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.(Windows 8/10 users will be prompted about Windows SmartScreen protection - click More information and Run.)
  • Make sure Addition.txt is checkmarked under "Optional scans"
  • Press Scan button to run the tool....
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • The tool will also make a log named (Addition.txt) Please attach that log to your reply.

Thank you,

Kevin....

Rkill ran successfully, however I got the same exact result from FRST.exe as I did last time, I noticed it stops at a specific point however and was able to get a screencap of it. FRST did still make a text long but i'm not sure if it will be of much use since I have to forcefully close it once it hits that area.

Thanks for that log, I want you to run FRST from the Recovery Environment as follows...

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool from here:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/farbar-recovery-scan-tool/

save it to a USB flash drive. Ensure to get the correct version for your system, 32 bit or 64 bit

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.

Plug the flash drive into the infected PC.

If you are using Windows 8/10 consult How to use the Windows 8 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt Here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/windows-8-recovery-environment-command-prompt/ to enter System Recovery Command prompt.

If you are using Vista or Windows 7 enter System Recovery Options.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options I give two methods, use whichever is convenient for you.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select Your Country as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you may get the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

  • Select Command Prompt
  • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  • In the command window type e:\frst64 or e:\frst depending on your version. Press Enter Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Thank you,

Kevin...

I've run into a bit of a problem, well more so my possible lack of knowledge for this but, after selecting repair my computer once I open the advanced recover options, this shows up. I'm not sure if I did anything wrong or this is supposed to happen, and if so which to select. I do apologize for my incompetence when it comes to this kind of stuff.

I hit f8 as instructed, and hit enter on repair computer. I made sure I wasn't hitting anything else and the results were the same. I was able to capture what happened after hitting repair with my phone. After the third image is when the ASUS recovery wizard shows up, the fourth is what happens after I close the recovery wizard. I don't have an install disk either.

The same results had happened if I had launched it normally, I tried launching in Safe Mode with Networking first, then launched it in Safe Mode to see if it made any difference and it still halts the scan once it gets to Scanning Services: WatAdminSvc. I can provide the log below for when I had launched in Safe Mode, I can go into Safe Mode with Networking again and run a scan there if you need a log from there.

Read the following link before we continue and run Combofix:

ComboFix usage, Questions, Help? - Look here

Next,

Download Combofix from either of the following links :-

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

http://www.infospyware.net/antimalware/combofix/

  • Ensure that Combofix is saved directly to the Desktop <--- Very important
  • Disable all security programs as they will have a negative effect on Combofix, instructions available here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html if required. Be aware the list may not have all programs listed, if you need more help please ask.
  • Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
  • Double click the user posted image icon to run the tool (Vista or Windows 7 users right click and select "Run as Administrator)
  • Instructions for running Combofix available here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix if required.
  • If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?" Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this. Once the recovery console is installed Combofix will then offer to scan for malware. Select continue or yes.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read here http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?page=20 why disabling autoruns is recommended.

*EXTRA NOTES*
  • If Combofix detects any Rootkit/Bootkit activity on your system it will give a warning and prompt for a reboot, you must allow it to do so.
  • If Combofix reboot's due to a rootkit, the screen may stay black for several minutes on reboot, this is normal
  • If after running Combofix you receive any type of warning message about registry key's being listed for deletion when trying to open certain items, reboot the system and this will fix the issue (Those items will not be deleted)

Post the log in next reply please...

Plug the USB into the sick PC and boot up, if it does not boot from the flash drive change the boot options as required, Use F12 as it boots, change options...
As it boots you`ll see files being loaded and the windows splash screen, eventually the tool will run a "Quick Scan" follow the prompts and deal with what it finds.
When complete do a full scan, deal with what it finds.
When finished, remove the USB stick then press the Esc key to boot into regular windows.
Navigate to the following file:

"C:\Windows\Windows Defender Offline\Support\MPLog-MM/DD/YYYY-HH/MM/SS .txt"

Open with notepad and copy and paste it into a reply.

  • Install it on your system.
  • It will initially run a scan and show the result as a toaster by the system clock.
  • When complete plugin your ext hard drive, McShield will check it out...
  • Plug in any Flash Drives you may use, they will be checked out.

Formatting the driver works but for some reason WD Offline says "There was a problem formatting the selected USB drive." despite it being formatted already. Also, posting this now before I restart or shutdown or try to stop it, it tried scanning the files but it seems to ahve started hanging and done the exact same thing it does when it's scanned, what should I do, wait it out?

Do you mean FRST search is hanging, if so try the following:

Please download SystemLook from the following link below and save it to your Desktop. Use the correct version 32bit or 64bit.

http://jpshortstuff.247fixes.com/SystemLook_x64.exe <<- 64 bit….

http://images.malwareremoval.com/jpshortstuff/SystemLook.exe <<- 32 bit

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:

    :filefind
    watadminsvc.exe

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt
