win32/amalum

Recommended Posts

I have CA antivirus. It keeps displaying that I have the win32/amalum virus, yet it wil not remove it. I get what appears to be random errors displaying that the file NETSH.exe is missing, with NMCTXTH.exe unable to locate component in the left corner of the error box. Tried malwarebytes forum ideas to no avail.....Here is log file from hijack this...

Note:

The
Windows Recovery Console
will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click
    Yes
to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

  • Please post the
    C:\ComboFix.txt
    along with a
    new HijackThis log
so we may continue cleaning the system.

STEP 01

You need to choose either Avira or CA Anti-Virus and fully remove the other one. You can only have 1 Anti-Virus installed as they conflict with each other.

After you remove one of them then please check and delete/empty the Quarantine area for the remaining Anti-Virus program.

Then run this:

STEP 02

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should
Create a New Restore Point
to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.

Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.

Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.

Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to
"roll-back"
to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is

:
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Programs
    >
    Accessories
    >
    System Tools
    and click "
    System Restore
    ".
  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on
    START
    >
    RUN
    > and type in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    and click OK

  • Choose the radio button marked "
    Create a Restore Point
" on the first screen then click "
    Next
    ".

  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "
    Create
    ".

  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

  • Then use the
    Disk Cleanup
to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Run
    and type:
    Cleanmgr.exe

  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "
    Ok
". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

  • Click the "
    More Options
" tab, then click the "
    Clean up
    " button under System Restore.

  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "
Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?
    "

  • Click
    Yes
    , then click Ok.

  • Click
    Yes
    again when prompted with "
Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
    "

  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

  • On the
    Disk Cleanup
    tab, if the
    System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores
entry is available remove them also.

  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.

Then run this

STEP 03

Please go into the Control Panel, Add/Remove and for now remove ALL versions of JAVA

Then run this tool to help cleanup any left over Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer (or other web browser) before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location and post it back when you reply
Then look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.
    C:\Program Files\Java
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
    C:\Windows\Sun
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

STEP 04

    Download and install CCleaner
  • CCleaner
  • Double-click on the downloaded file "ccsetup220_slim.exe" and install the application.
  • Keep the default installation folder "C:\Program Files\CCleaner"
  • Click finish when done and close ALL PROGRAMS
  • Start the CCleaner program.
  • Click on Registry and Uncheck Registry Integrity so that it does not run (basically the very top, uncheck it)
  • Click on Options - Advanced and Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
  • Click back to Cleaner and under SYSTEM uncheck the Memory Dumps and Windows Log Files
  • Click on Run Cleaner button on the bottom right side of the program.
  • Click OK to any prompts

RESTART THE COMPUTER NOW

STEP 05

Download and Update Java Runtime

The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14 about half way down the page and click on the Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be on your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Uncheck the Toolbar button (unless you want the toolbar)
  • Reboot your computer

STEP 06

Now temporarily DISABLE your current Anti-Virus and run this Online AV scanner

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus

Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan

Official Statement from CA re: Win32/Amalum False Positive

WIN32/AMalum.ZZNXU Files detected

If CA was set to delete infected files instead of quarantine then you will need your copy of XP to do an SFC scan or copy them using the Recovery Console, otherwise you should be able to restore them from the Quarantine folder.

Here are results from ESET online scanner.

I continue to get an error every 10 minutes or so that says the "application has failed to start because netsh.exe file was not found. reinstalling the application may fix this problem." In the left corner of the errror message is the following "nmctxth.exe-unable to locate component". This all started when my ca antivirus detected the false positive on the win32/amalum. I have to clik Ok 4 times before my screen clears, only to have it show up again about 10 minutes later all over again. I also note that I cannot restore to ANY restore point in my system. No matter how far back I go, it will not restore to a previous restore point. I treid to put my windows disc in to recover lost files, and I get an error stating I need the service pack 3 disc. I only have service pack 2 disc.

It is driving me nuts.........

You need to restore the files detected by CA:

  • Open CA anti-virus
  • Click on Advanced Settings
  • Click on Quarantine on the left
  • Click on the item(s) that were falsely detected and click Restore at the top
  • Do this for each of the files detected as win32/amalum

If the files have already been deleted from quarantine but you have a standard Windows XP disc (not an OEM Recovery Disc) then you can slipstream Service Pack 3 into it to use for restoring the files per the instructions here
