Windows Activation Virus?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

My computer has been running slower than usual so I have reason to believe I may have caught some malware. I've been downloading many files recently and noticed new startup items in the task manager not added by me. One of them is "Microsoft(C) Register Server" and the other was "Windows_Activation". Another symptom was the command prompt suddenly ran and appeared to have made changes to my registry.

At this point I ran a threat scan on Malwarebytes and it seemed to catch a lot of things. I went ahead and deleted the folder the "Windows_Activation.exe" was in as well.

I still see the "Microsoft(C) Register Server" in my startup which was never there before. I feel like malware remnants are still here so I'm seeking help online. Thanks for helping!

Thanks for the update, when we complete the clean up it will be advisable to change all passwords on your system, specifically any applications with a financial impact. Lets continue:

Sophos can be uninstalled via Programs and Features..

Next,

Download "Delfix by Xplode" and save it to your desktop.

Or use the following if first link is down:

"Delfix link mirror"

If your security program alerts to Delfix either, accept the alert or turn your security off.

Double Click to start the program. If you are using Vista or higher, please right-click and choose run as administrator

Make Sure the following items are checked:

  • Remove disinfection tools <----- this will remove tools we have used.
  • Purge System Restore <--- this will remove all previous and possibly exploited restore points, a new point relative to system status at present will be created.
  • Reset system settings <--- this will reset any system settings back to default that were changed either by us during cleansing or malware/infection

Now click on "Run" and wait patiently until the tool has completed.

The tool will create a log when it has completed. We don't need you to post this.

Any remnant files/logs from tools we have used can be deleted…
