latheofheaven Posted September 18, 2016 ID:1062467 Share Posted September 18, 2016 Hello! This is my first post here. After some recent update (I THINK it appeared like a standard Google update of some kind) my Android telephone which has been perfectly fine for over a year suddenly began displaying unwanted popup ads on my homescreen. They appear randomly and usually run the same 6-8 ads each time. I have done scans with both Avast and Malwarebytes and NOTHING has been flagged or found! The ads consist of a couple of what LOOK like Google play apps. One is for my battery. A couple have the heading 'WISH' on them. Sooooo, could someone PLEASE tell me, where the heck are these ads coming from...? I download NO games or superfluous apps. My telephone is rooted and I have gone carefully through everything that is currently running and I don't see anything out of the ordinary. Any suggestions would be VERY nice, thank you! latheofheaven Posted September 18, 2016 Author ID:1062468 Share Posted September 18, 2016 Heh, actually, I just installed CM antivirus and SUPPOSEDLY in like literally 5 seconds it found 3 malware 'exploits' and 'phishing' files. So, IF it actually in reality found and got rid of those, maybe my ads will be gone now, I don't know... I'll come back in a day or so and say whether the ads are gone. Thanks! latheofheaven Posted September 19, 2016 Author ID:1062579 Share Posted September 19, 2016 Nope... It LOOKED like it caught 4 malware programs, but I'm still getting the popups on my homescreen
a_Mbam Posted September 23, 2016 ID:1063582 Share Posted September 23, 2016 Hi Latheofheaven, These are browser related, unfortunately this is caused by how the browsers are handling javascript and the redirections. Chrome doesn’t do a great job of preventing these redirects or pop-ups. Advertising affiliates have found this loop hole and have been exploiting it. If they get shutdown it’s only a temporary fix, cause they’ll be back with a new affiliate id. The best way to block is to try a different browser, disable javascript, install a browser with ad blocking (like Opera), or install Ad-block Plus. Ad-block Plus works only with Wifi and needs additional configuration, but works. https://adblockplus.org/en/android-install If you encounter these pop-ups again, back out of the using Android's back key. Clearing history and cache will help they tabs reoccur when closing browser. Regards, -Armando
latheofheaven Posted September 23, 2016 Author ID:1063591 Share Posted September 23, 2016 Hey Armando! Thanks kindly for taking the time to answer and for the excellent suggestions. I did try Opera and uninstalling Chrome, but no go... I tried Adblock Plus, but no... So, since I was getting kind of desperate, I went ahead and reinstalled the Cyanmod OS along with GAPPS and redid everything and thankfully it is okay now. But, thank you VERY much for the help! Lets hope that stuff stays away. One interesting thing though... when I was re-installing everything, the MOMENT I tried re-installing Turbo Launcher (which I'd been using just fine for over a year and loved it) from Google Play, IMMEDIATELY I started getting the homes screen popups! So, needless to say, I IMMEDIATELY uninstalled it and went with Nova Launcher, which is fine.
