Unable to to install - error 5 access denied

I received an email this morning from "Microsoft Support Team" who clearly was an imposter due to the lack of icon and obscure email address. The email claimed that my computer is infected with either a virus or malware and to call a number. I did not call the number and reported the email for "phishing." However, I tried to perform a routine scan to reinforce the situation in case my computer really is infected and I believe that it is -- thanks a-holes. 

Anyway, the Malwarebytes program would not run or open for a scan. I uninstalled the program through my control panel and completed the clean uninstallment process posted on a different forum. I then tried reinstalling Malwarebytes but an error message popped up stating "Error 5: access denied." 

I have a Dell computer with Windows 10. Thank you for any assistance

Hi Sophie,

 

We are going to perform a clean install, please follow these steps:

Make sure you have your ID and key handy before uninstalling.


**Please run step 1 twice before running step 2**

Do Not skip **Step 1:**

**Step 1:** Run the clean up tool and allow a reboot when prompted.

 **Restart the pc**


**Step 2:** Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) by following the link below.

Save the file and double-click it to begin the installation, selecting options you desire when presented.


Once the program is installed, activate the license with the ID and Key.
There should be a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware icon on the desktop, double-click that to open program. If there is no icon, you can go to:
C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware<<<<this folder... and double click the mbam icon in that folder

Once open, there will be a series of tabs, labeled in order:
Scanner | Protection | Update | Quarantine | Logs | Ignore list | Settings | More Tools | About

Click the “Activate” button  to proceed for a successful registration.
Note:  The license-related links in the Menu Bar will then appear at the link called “My Account” at the top.
Note: The code is case sensitive and contains letters and numbers that can be easily confused, so make sure you distinguish between the letter "O" and the number "0", or alphabet "l" and the number "1" or a letter S  and a  number 5, if you enter the code manually.

 

Please make sure you are **COPYING and PASTING** the license key directly into the proper fields. Please also make sure you are only including the letters and numbers and not the words ID or Key. Finally, make sure you are not including additional spaces before or after the ID and Key.

If done correctly you should get it registered.

**Power Off and Restart the pc**

 

**How to Copy / Paste** If Needed

Take your mouse, and place your cursor at the beginning of the text, then click and hold the left mouse button
 while dragging your mouse over the text. This should highlight the text.
 
 Now release the left mouse button.
 
 Now, with the cursor over the highlighted text, right click the mouse for options, and select 'copy'.
 
 Now over the empty space for the numbers, right click your mouse again, and select 'paste' and you will have copied and pasted the text.
