Malwarebytes comes up clean but my Avira scan keeps showing this. Avira also tells me to use their boot sector repair tool but I can't get it to work for me. Here are my Avira and Hijackthis logs. My Hijackthis log is identical to several months ago except for the O21 line. That was not there before. What should I do?

Where did you download mbr.exe too?

If you downloaded it to your desktop type this command in the run command (please include quotes)

"%userprofile%\Desktop\mbr.exe" -f and then press the enter key

if its on your rootdrive (c:\)

"%systemdrive%\mbr.exe" -f then press enter.

I had mbr.exe on the c: drive but couldn't get the run command to work so I moved it to the desktop and did that first scan from the desktop. Here is the 2nd scan you asked for. It says restored successfully. Is that all there is to it?

That log still shows the mbr rootkit. is that the old log?

dds_scr.gif

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here

Disable any script blocker, and then double click dss.scr to run the tool.

  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
  1. DDS.txt
  2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop
  • In your next reply, please attach both logs. Thanks

I guess I'm not sure what that last log I posted was. I ran it again and here is the newest log. I also did a quick boot sector scan with Avira and that came back clean. None of the links you posted for DDS worked.

I had already run mbam and it came back clean but I ran another scan tonight and it was also clean. I will post it here. I also ran hijackthis and avira and they both look good except for the 021 line which did not appear a few months ago. I also ran that mbr.exe again and will post that log as well. That is the only one showing anything I think.

I used recovery console to do the fixmbr command. Everything worked I think but the mbr.exe log still shows something. None of my other scans show anything though.

delete mbr.exe

Now that your system is clean you should SET A NEW RESTORE POINT to prevent future reinfection from the old restore point AFTER cleaning your system of any malware infection. Any trojans or spyware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore and are waiting to re-infect you. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete files, trapping viruses inside. Setting a new restore point should be done to prevent any future reinfection from the old restore point and enable your computer to "roll-back" in case there is a future problem.

To SET A NEW RESTORE POINT:

1. Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".

2. Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

Graphics for doing this are in the following links if you need them.

How to Create a Restore Point.

How to use Cleanmgr.
