Unable to access update server

Recommended Posts

My premium version of Malwarebytes has all of a sudden been unable to update.  Also, it's reverted back to free and when I enter my (still valid) premium key and ID I get "must be connected to Internet" message.  I know my laptop is connected to the Internet because I'm able to access Google and other programs don't have the problem either.  I've tried adding MBAM to both of my firewalls (Windows 7 and Zone Alarm) but it still says it's not connected.  I don't know how to fix this.

Check results attached.

Hello and Welcome to Malwarebytes :)

Let's try this first....

  1. Please follow the steps in this pinned topic to uninstall your current version of MBAM and reinstall the latest build - MBAM Clean Removal Process 2x
  2. If that does not correct the issue, then please read the following and attach to your next reply the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs(the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)
  3. NOTE: More info about v2.2.1 HERE; User Guide ONLINE; User Guide PDF; FAQ: Common Questions, Issues, and their Solutions

Please let us know how it goes.

Thank You,

It is not your system. I too have the latest version, and am also unable to access the update server. Malwarebytes has created this issue with an update to their latest version. I can access any site, windows update, my antvirus updates, but Malwarebytes will not update. I have confirmed this is an issue with the software, by completely uninstalling MBAM and installing V. 1.75 as an experiment. Guess what? MBAM V. 1.75 updates just fine!! Come on, Malwarebytes, fix your buggy software!

@spiritorb There could be many reasons why a computer would not be able to update, and in order to know why is why we request the logs. If you are having this issue, kindly start your own topic (and if you already have, then continue to seek help in your own topic as everyone's computer is different)

As for it being a Malwarebytes bug, I can not confirm that as I don't work for Malwarebytes, however if it was indeed a bug, we would be encountering a lot more users with this issue, as Malwarebytes is installed on millions of computers, this does not seem to be a bug.

Did you people even READ my reply?? I have no problem updating any other software, nor do, I have any issues accessing the net! If there were a problem with the PC, I would NOT be able to update V. 1.75, which, by the way, updated just fine. I did a removal of V 2.2.1.1053 following the recommended procedure, using MBAM clean tool. I then installed V. 1.75 as a test to see if it would update. When is Malwarebytes just going to admit that their product is not perfect, as so many on this forum think?

@spiritorbNot one of the people on this thread has run any diagnostic logs so that reasons for their issues can be accurately determined.  Venting does nothing nor does getting into agreement with someone else who also provided no data to work with.   I DO invite you to do something constructive other than vent.  You may actually be happy with the results.

Please read the following AND create you OWN topic regarding your issue and attach  the 3 requested logs - Diagnostic Logs(the 3 logs are: FRST.txt, Addition.txt and CheckResults.txt)

I would not be surprised if it is  Zone Alarm causing this. I would uninstall it reboot and try again.

I have several computers that run MBAM and I noticed last year that one of my computers was unable to reach the update server while another computer had no problem.  I found that by using a VPN or by using Google Public DNS, I was then able to contact the MBAM update server on the problem computer.  I also noticed that the problem went away on the problem computer just as quickly as it had started.

You might want to try using a free VPN or Google Public DNS to see if that works for you:  https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/

Hello LauraH1382:

The above, attached CheckResults.txt report appears to have been generated by the long obsoleted mbam-check-2.1.1.1001.exe.

Please delete any obsoleted copies and rerun using only mbam-check-2.3.2.0.exe and attach the CheckResults.txt file for expert analysis.

Thank you.

Was following this topic and ended up downloading the mbam-check utility via the above posted link. Ran the utility (out of curiosity), read the report, and on the next shut down/startup Malwarebytes Anti-Malware started in the "free" version. I needed to re-enter my ID and registration code to reactivate my Pro license. Any other reports of this, or possibly this is the intended result?

@LauraH1382

The logs indicate you're using AVG antivirus as well as ZoneAlarm firewall. Please ensure that AVG is excluding the executable files of MBAM as well as the firewall allowing them access out. If you need further help please let us know.

@Homer712

Not sure exactly what issue you're having or explaining. If you used the MBAM CLEAN utility then it removes all and you'd need to reactivate on a new clean install which is normal.

If you're having some other issue then I'd suggest creating your own topic so that we assist you directly instead of mixing in with someone else post.

Thanks
