I first thought something was going on when I ran Spyware Terminator and it couldn't connect to update. After I restarted my computer, I started getting the awful SVCHost.exe application error (the instruction at "0x8c27a0eb" referenced memory at "0x8c27a0eb". The memory could not be "read".) If I click OK to terminate the program (OK being the only option), I get another popup that says the system has to shut down and there's a little timer with 60 seconds to close everything before the system shuts down.

I had read something about Windows Update causing SVCHost errors - not sure if this is related to that because other things seem to be wrong as well.

I also noticed that, upon trying to use System Restore, that System Restore has been turned off and I cannot turn it back on. I also can't seem to get online and even the tried to check the network settings but it just came up a blank window.

Here is a HijackThis log from the system. Any help would be great because essentially my PC is unusable.

Okay, here is the new hijackThis log, and I've attached the ComboFix.txt file as well. I see some all too familiar files were found (I've gotten rid of them before but they've come back).

I followed these latest instructions, updated and ran malwarebytes again. I got the same results as before - nothing was found, nothing removed. I'm not on my computer right now (meaning I'll have to post the logs at a later time) but I wanted to add this while it was all fresh in my memory. I realize what that aries.sys stuff is - it's from the Sony rootkit that comes with those copyright protected CDs. Well after using ComboFix to remove that junk, my CD/DVD drive no longer works. I get the wonderful Code 19 registry error when I look in device manager. I tried that whole thing about removing the Upper and Lower Filters but that didn't work. I followed Windows' advice of simply uninstalling the device and reinstalling it, but that did nothing either. This problem is almost as annoying as the ones I started out with! Anyway, if there is a simple fix for this, I would really appreciate learning what it is because I don't want to mess with the registry and cause more problems.

Okay, I managed to fix the CD-ROM drive problem. There was a program from Sony/XCM that you can run to remove any lingering registry entries from the crater.sys, aries.sys, etc. files. There were several other Upper/lower filters that referenced these (which couldn't be found because they were removed by ComboFix, thus causing the problem). Anyway, everything seems to be in order with that.

Great, glad to hear all is working well again.

I'll close your post soon so that other don't post into it and leave you with this information and suggestions.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

At this time your system appears to be clean. Nothing else in the logs indicates that you are still infected.

Now that you appear to be clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Remove all but the most recent Restore Point on Windows XP

You should
Create a New Restore Point
to prevent possible reinfection from an old one.

Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore.

Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point.

Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to
"roll-back"
to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is

:
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Programs
    >
    Accessories
    >
    System Tools
    and click "
    System Restore
    ".
  • If the shortcut is missing you can also click on
    START
    >
    RUN
    > and type in
    %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
    and click OK

  • Choose the radio button marked "
    Create a Restore Point
" on the first screen then click "
    Next
    ".

  • Give the new Restore Point a name, then click "
    Create
    ".

  • The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

  • Then use the
    Disk Cleanup
to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to
    Start
    >
    Run
    and type:
    Cleanmgr.exe

  • Select the drive where Windows is installed and click "
    Ok
". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.

  • Click the "
    More Options
" tab, then click the "
    Clean up
    " button under System Restore.

  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "
Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?
    "

  • Click
    Yes
    , then click Ok.

  • Click
    Yes
    again when prompted with "
Are you sure you want to perform these actions?
    "

  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

  • On the
    Disk Cleanup
    tab, if the
    System Restore: Obsolete Data Stores
entry is available remove them also.

  • These are files that were created before Windows was reformatted or reinstalled. They are obsolete and you can delete them.
